This month the Airedale Active Together Service have reached an unbelievable milestone - with 100 people using their service since it launched in September last year.
Active Together is a cancer exercise treatment service funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research. It helps people prepare for and recover from cancer treatment and provides 1:1 support in clinic or in a gym setting, along with three weekly exercise sessions. It also offers nutrition and wellbeing support.
The Airedale service sees people at Skipton General Hospital, Craven Leisure Centre, Keighley Leisure Centre and Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club. It also runs weekly exercise classes at Craven Leisure Centre, Highfield Community Centre, Keighley and St Margaret’s Church Hall, Ilkley.
Norma from Bingley found out she needed surgery for bowel cancer. To help build her fitness ahead of the operation and reduce the risk of complications afterwards, Norma was referred to Active Together, where she began a personalised cancer exercise treatment plan, alongside tailored nutritional support.
Thankfully, Norma’s operation was successful, and she spent just three days in hospital before returning home to finish her recovery.
“My operation went amazingly well. My recovery this time, compared to my previous operation, was definitely far easier and that’s all down to Active Together. The exercises I was given helped tremendously, and I really believe they made the difference in speeding up my recovery.”
