Horse Fly Bites

Horse flys are out in force at the moment, whether you are gardening , going for a run or a walk it’s highly likely you may come across them.

Here is some interesting facts about horse flies:

Size: 12-25mm long 🪰
Feeds on: Blood 🩸
Peak feeding activity: daylight ☀️
Likes: Shiny surfaces (pools) 💦, movement 🏃‍♀️ , dark colours , marshy areas, direct sunlight 🌞
Dislikes: light colours, shaded areas, dragonflies, hornets 🐝, wasps and some birds .
Breeding Habits: underneath gravel or vegetation near a water source.

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot for too long, there are health risks.

💧 drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol

🚗 never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals

☀️ try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm

🧴 walk in the shade, apply sunscreen regularly and wear a wide brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat

🛟 if you are going into open water to cool down, take care and follow local safety advice

🌡Feeling hot, hot, hot! 🌡

With temperatures rising further across the UK this week, we thought another share of this handy graphic might be useful!

If you're breastfeeding your little one in this heat, remember:

☀️ In hot weather, your baby may want to feed more often or for longer than usual.
☀️ If they're under 6 months and exclusively breastfed, there's no need to give any additional water - just feed on demand to keep them hydrated and make sure you're getting plenty of fluids yourself.
☀️ Your body will generally continue producing enough milk for your baby's demand (except if you get extremely dehydrated), but keep on top of your water and ice lolly intake for your own wellbeing!
☀️ Babies over 6 months who have started eating solid foods should be offered water in a cup with meals, and throughout the day in hot weather.
