17th July 2019.

What is it like to be a child living with autism.

This was written by Bradley O'Connell in his own words aged 15yrs.

Its hard swallowing pills so I recommend dis-solvable ones, but everyone is different
and some will just refuse some medication. It is hard to swallow because of the taste.
If you are having this problem give them something good to help wash it down like a
treat or something they like. (I used my sandwich)
Going to the toilet is tricky with germs and again everyone is different. If they don’t
want to use a public toilet then don’t try making it better by encouraging them to go.
60% of the time it wont help the situation It will only make it worse.
When you have autism stuff sounds louder and you’re a bit more sensitive so when
going to a firework display, listening to bands, or other loud activity's get a good pair
of ear defenders, to help block out the noise. The better they are the more it will
help
In school it’s hard to remember the task being asked to do. It’s easier to have a
step-by-step guide. Only give them 1 step at a time because it’s too much and will be
to confusing. Always try to bare with them so they can understand especially if they
have a lot to do.
When you are going clothes shopping make sure to check with them first, because
the label or the clothes might irritate them and would need to be cut off

🎄We recognise that the Christmas and New Year break can be a difficult time for victims of domestic abuse.

👮 📱We are always here to help day or night and we can help even when it’s not safe for you to speak.

Each month we receive dozens of silent 999 calls where we are needed immediately.

😟The majority of these calls are from people suffering domestic abuse, who often can’t say much but urgently need our help to escape a desperate situation.

Dialling 5,5 after calling 999 alerts police operators that you need help but are in a situation where you can't talk.

📱Pressing 5,5 lets the 999 operator know your call is genuine, and they will try to track your location. If you can't speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions.

📱Find out more on our website How to make a silent 999 call | Hertfordshire Constabulary
