There isn’t a right or wrong time to grieve. For some people, the hardest days come immediately after a loss. For others, the weight of bereavement arrives months or sometimes years later. This experience is often known as delayed grief. It’s a natural response that many people experience and is more common than many people realise.

Recent UK and Ireland research involving more than 2,000 bereaved adults found that depression, anxiety and emotional distress remain common long after a bereavement, particularly following sudden or traumatic losses. (ResearchGate 2024)
