Healthwatch Hertfordshire We are Hertfordshire's independent health and social care champion. We’re Hertfordshire's independent health and social care champion.

We make sure NHS leaders and other decision-makers hear your voice and use your feedback to improve care. If you use GPs and hospitals, dentists, pharmacies, care homes or other support services, we want to hear from you. We listen to your needs, experiences and concerns about local health and social care services, so we can speak out on your behalf. We gather your feedback through high-quality research and engagement and by inviting you to share your experiences. Our aim is to get services right for the future and ensure your worries and concerns about current services are addressed. We want to make sure those in charge put you at the heart of care and, if local needs are not being met, we have statutory powers to hold the system to account. We can also help if you have a question about health or social care services, but aren’t sure where to go to find the answer. Our experienced signposting team can help – whether you need to know how to make a complaint, how to access a service, or would like to give feedback. You can be confident that we are entirely independent and impartial and anything you share with us is confidential. We can only do our job with your help.

Adults with autism in Hertfordshire told us it was difficult finding help or support after their diagnosis.
"I had to find almost everything myself through online research, social media, or word of mouth. There was no joined-up pathway, no follow-up after diagnosis, and no one to guide me through what support was available.”

It's Cervical Cancer Prevention Week! All week we will be sharing information on HPV and the role of the HPV vaccination and cervical screening in cancer prevention.

Every day in the UK, two women and people with a cervix lose their lives to cervical cancer and nine more receive a life-changing diagnosis. We have a real opportunity to change this.

Cervical cancer is almost wholly preventable, and the government and NHS England have launched their plan to eliminate it by 2024. To get us to our goal of cervical cancer elimination, three key things are needed:
-9 in 10 girls vaccinated as part of the schools’ HPV vaccination programme or catch-up programme
-7 in 10 women and people with a cervix screened as part of the cervical screening programme
-9 in 10 women and people with a cervix who have precancerous cell changes, or cancer, identified and treated.

Yet, HPV vaccination and cervical screening uptake is still well below what is needed to reach our goal of eliminating cervical cancer.

Our survey (YouGov) found that around 3 in 4 people said they would be willing to get a vaccination to help reduce the risk of six types of cancer if they were eligible. Yet only 1 in 2 said they would get the HPV vaccination, which does help to reduce the risk of six types of cancer.

Out of the people we surveyed between 18-24 year olds, many of which will be eligible for the HPV vaccination as part of the catch-up programme, 4 in 5 said they would be willing to get a vaccination if it helped reduce the risk of six cancers.

Only 1 in 2 people we surveyed were aware that cervical cancer can be caused by HPV.

Awareness was even lower for the other five cancers – around 1 in 3 were aware HPV could cause vulval and vaginal cancers. Around 1 in 5 people were aware HPV could cause a**l and pe**le cancers. Just 8 in 100 people are aware HPV could cause head and neck cancers.

Keep an eye on our socials through the week for more information.

Children and young people's health is being affected by poor living conditions in temporary care.

Yet their lived experience is little understood. This needs to change.

At Healthwatch Hertfordshire, we have listened to families and young people to understand how poor living conditions are affecting their lives.

One of the case studies we’ve gathered highlights the experience of a refugee family living in temporary accommodation, where poor housing conditions and inadequate food provision are contributing to worsening health for a young child, aggravating their asthma and leading to repeated illness.

👉 This case study builds on our 'lost in the system' report which we published in 2025: https://buff.ly/rvv95k1.

No child should experience worsening health because of where they are forced to live.
Children’s voices must be heard — and acted on.
