Steyning Medical Practice

Steyning Medical Practice Steyning Medical Practice is located in the heart of the South Downs, in the peaceful village of Steyning, West Sussex.

With just over 12,000 patients, we aim to to provide high quality, accessible care, in a safe, responsive and courteous manner. The present practice was opened at its current location 1973, being a continuation of individual practices within the Steyning & Upper Beeding areas. The Medical Practice expanded in 1974 and again in 1980 and 1991, before the current, purpose-built Health Centre was opened in 2008. The practice purchased a branch surgery in Dawn Close, Upper Beeding in 1985, greatly improving the facilities and healthcare provision for Beeding residents. Alongside our nine GPs, works a large team of Health Professionals - Nurses, Health Visitors, Speech Therapists, Counsellors, Chiropodists, Physiotherapists, Midwives - backed up by the support staff of Practice Administrators, Receptionists, Secretaries and Telephonists. Together we try to run the Health Centre as professionally and efficiently as we can, to provide our patients with the best possible standards of healthcare. We are an experienced and dedicated teaching practice, and has over the years trained a high number of doctors in general practice, the majority of whom practice as GPs around the UK.

Once again today we have had a patient shout at one of our receptionists and cause upset amongst the team because their demands were not immediately met. This is is another case of many in recent weeks and is becoming an almost daily occurrence. People take their frustrations out on our receptionists and if they do not get what they want immediately will often shout and threaten and be generally unpleasant for all involved and this is utterly unacceptable. Our reception team are there to help you and work incredibly hard at their jobs. Some have been doing it for years but some are new and are still learning the ropes but every single one of them is there to help our patients and tries their absolute hardest to meet the needs of everyone.

We appreciate that when you are unwell, you may be anxious and keen to speak to a GP who knows you. But we run an appointment system and it needs to be fair to everybody and it needs to be safe also. You cannot walk in and demand to speak to a clinician there and then. They are busy and have long lists of other patients to see who also need their full attention.

We also do not have infinite appointments and whilst we always try our hardest to maintain continuity where we can, it is not always possible or will require a long wait for you to see a clinician of your choosing. The fact that you may have to wait is NOT our receptionists’ fault so please do not take it out on them. They are trying their absolute hardest to be fair and get everyone seen who needs to be seen.

They act on the instructions of the GPs, in particular the Partners, who have designed our current triage system carefully and who work incredibly hard to ensure it is fair and accessible to everyone. You may feel you have a close relationship with a particular GP but that is not an excuse to behave badly and demand to see them, or point blank refuse to see another GP if yours is not available, whilst shouting at the person who is trying to help you. If it is a truly urgent issue, you will be dealt with by the duty Doctor who is on call that day.

Aggression, threats and intimidation is absolutely unacceptable in any situation let alone in a GP surgery and will not be tolerated. We have removed threatening and aggressive patients in the past and we will not hesitate to do it again.

Please think before you lash out and take your frustration out on someone who is simply doing their job.

If you have a formal complaint then please put it in writing to the Practice Manager.

In Loving Memory of Sonja Watson
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Sonja Watson, who died last December after living with cancer with extraordinary strength and dignity.
Sonja was a truly special person — warm, funny, and full of compassion. She dedicated her life to caring for others, first as an oncology nurse, where she supported countless patients through some of their most difficult moments, and later as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. She joined Steyning Medical Practice at the end of 2019 and quickly became a cherished member of our team. Her deep clinical knowledge was matched only by her kindness and ability to make patients feel seen, heard, and truly cared for.
Even after her diagnosis, Sonja remained committed to her work and continued to give so much of herself to the team and to her patients for as long as she could. Remarkably, throughout her illness, she never lost her sense of humour or her infectious sense of fun — both of which lifted the spirits of everyone around her. Her courage, warmth, and joyfulness were truly inspiring.
Sonja left an indelible mark on our practice and our hearts. She is profoundly missed.
In her memory, staff from Steyning Medical Practice will be running the Race for Life in Worthing on Sunday 15th June, raising funds in her honour. If you would like to support this tribute, donations can be made via the following link: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/team/steyning-medical-practice-2025
We run for Sonja — with love, with gratitude, and with pride.

To the owner of the bright yellow Lotus sports car, who keeps parking on the pavement in front of the Health Centre every Friday, and today moved the barriers we had put up to prevent this, please stop.

You are affecting patient's ability to access the health centre safely as well as causing issues with deliveries. We understand you want to protect your car, however this should not be at the expense of those who need to navigate the car park safely and easily.

Please use the car park opposite.

We are currently experiencing significant IT issues. Engineers are trying to address the issue but internet service is intermittent and unreliable. This is impacting our ability to process routine prescriptions, letters and requests. If your query can wait, we would appreciate if you could try next week. Anything urgent, please contact the health centre directly.
Advice can always be found online via the NHS website, your local pharmacy and also 111.

17/12/2024

Due to limited staff over the Christmas Period, we have very few appointments available. Please bear this in mind when calling or submitting an online request, as we may only be able to manage urgent requests. If you need advice or treatment, you can contact, urgent treatment centres, minor injury units, or call NHS 111. You can also visit your local pharmacy for advice, and treatment may be given without needing to see a GP. Thank you for your understanding at this time.

Norovirus is spreading in our communities.

It's important to keep washing hands well with soap and if you catch the 'winter vomiting bug', wash clothes and bedding at 60 degrees.

Stay home from work and don't visit care homes or hospitals for 48 hours after symptoms clear up.

25/11/2024

Dear Patients,
The last date to submit your repeat prescription requests before Christmas is the 18th of December.
Please make sure you get your request to the practice by this date to avoid disappointment.
Thank you
