Something for this weekend……. Get your cosy socks off and make friends with your ‘plates of meat’. We are very hot on foot strength these days. The human foot has 26 bones, 33 joints, 29 muscles, and 100-112 ligaments and we strap them up in supportive cushioned footwear that make it harder to connect with the floor and work with what we are given. This is not a post against footwear but a call to get to know your feet and work them when you can. So many injuries we see relate to poor foot strength and reduced proprioception (feedback).

Something for the weekend. Great for Hamstrings, Glutes and some focus on lower spinal mobility. Keep the pelvis level. Make it harder by alternating leg lifts, lift your arms to reduce upper body support. Speed it up. Add a weight across your pelvis. The possibilities are endless.

Something for the weekend……..
I’ve been working more with clients on balance and co-ordination. And not just for older clients worried about falls. Activating the cerebellum by doing complex upper body movements in conjunction with single leg balance can improve your Proprioception and muscle firing patterns. Give it a try!

Nervous system adaptation. 2 mins of being unable to do this and then nailed it! He didn’t get stronger in that time but his nervous system learned the patterns needed to get the height.

New equipment arrival!! We have just added a Plyometric box to our equipment. I’ve been having a play with all its uses and it has something for everyone at all ages and stages, from helping older clients with supported squats to helping younger sports people with their later stage rehab.

Today marks the start of Rehab Awareness week. Rehabilitation is at the core of Physiotherapy. We want to help our patients return to independence, have more knowledge and awareness of their body; how it functions, how it heals and how to navigate the ups and downs of coming back from injury, trauma or surgery. Our small but very experienced team have worked in many Physiotherapy environments from Pitchside first aid, to A&E, on Brighton’s busy Trauma wards to Orthopaedic Hospitals in both the NHS and Private health. We have strong relationships with local surgeons and open dialogue to support you in your recovery. We all have a passion for knowledge and a curiosity to learn from the latest research and our wider Physio community. Please get in touch if you require help to rehabilitate from an acute injury, a chronic problem or surgery. We offer Physio, Pilates and Specialist Hand Therapy at the Clinic.

After a long training run today for the upcoming and half, I could feel my legs stiffening up so decided I’d try out my husband’s ice bath. I say my husband’s as I normally have zero interest in getting this cold. At 5degrees, I tolerated less than a minute!! New research has shown that women’s bodies don’t need such extreme cold temperatures and respond just as well, if not better around 14 degrees. I jumped straight in the wild pool after and it felt like a bath!

So true. A lot of back pain we see is from overworked superficial muscles in the spine. Fear of movement and a lack of core strength are big factors in how our spinal muscles behave. The spine is made up of 33 vertebrae and is designed to move, bend, twist and extend. By keeping it rigid, the deeper intervertebral muscles weaken and the muscles on the surface dominate. If you feel you need help resetting your postural habits, get in touch.

Here are Dr Xand's three suggestions on how to look after your back without turning into a statue.
