Hair loss in children

I see children in my clinic from time to time although unfortunately since the pandemic I have noticed an increase in the number of adolescents, especially teen years, that are suffering from hair loss and scalp concerns. This is such a difficult age to cope with hair loss, my heart goes out to them.

Unfortunately, hair loss can affect all ages and sadly we do see children in the clinic. children can suffer hair and scalp concerns just like adults and for the same contributing factors.

I completely understand that this is a challenging time not only for the child but also for their loved ones. A sensitive relaxed approach is taken to make the child feel as comfortable as possible and also to take away any fear they may have about their visit to the clinic.

Myth: All shampoos are the same.

Truth: Different shampoos cater to various hair types and concerns. Using the wrong shampoo can cause damage or leave your hair feeling less than its best.

Tip: Choose a shampoo that matches your hair type (e.g., oily, dry, curly, colour-treated) and addresses your specific needs (e.g., volumising, hydrating, anti-dandruff).

Remember, everyone's hair is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Pay attention to how your hair responds to different routines and products. If you notice signs of damage or excessive dryness, consider adjusting your shampooing frequency and product choice.

As with anything related to hair care, balance is key! If in doubt contact us.

Healthy Hair…

Healthy hair is often a reflection of overall health, and several factors can influence the health of one's hair. People with healthier hair typically share the following characteristics and habits:

Balanced Diet: A diet rich in essential nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, D, E, and B-complex vitamins (especially biotin), as well as minerals like iron and zinc, supports healthy hair. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, nuts, and seeds also contribute to hair health.

Good Hydration: Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps maintain healthy hair. Proper hydration ensures that hair follicles are healthy and that hair remains strong and shiny.

Proper Hair Care Routine: People with healthier hair often follow a regular hair care routine that includes gentle washing, conditioning, and occasional deep conditioning treatments. They avoid over-washing, which can strip hair of its natural oils.

Minimal Heat and Chemical Treatments: Limiting the use of heat styling tools (like blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners) and chemical treatments (like colouring, perming, and relaxing) helps prevent damage to the hair.

Low Stress Levels: Chronic stress can lead to hair loss and poor hair health. People who manage stress through activities like exercise, meditation, and hobbies often have healthier hair.

Healthy Scalp: A healthy scalp is crucial for healthy hair. People with healthier hair often maintain scalp health by keeping it clean, avoiding harsh chemicals, and treating conditions like dandruff or scalp infections promptly.

Genetics: Genetics play a significant role in hair health. Some people are naturally predisposed to have healthier hair due to their genetic makeup.

Avoiding Harsh Products: Using gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, and avoiding products with harsh chemicals, can help maintain hair health.

Protective Hairstyles: People who wear protective hairstyles that reduce tension and minimise breakage, such as braids, twists, or loose buns, often experience healthier hair.

Regular Trims: Regular trims help remove split ends and prevent further damage, contributing to healthier hair.

Avoiding Smoking and Excessive Alcohol Consumption: Both smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can negatively affect hair health. People with healthier hair often avoid these habits.

By adopting these habits and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, individuals can promote the health and vitality of their hair.

Baseball caps yes or no!

Wearing baseball caps is generally not harmful to your hair and scalp, but there are some considerations to ensure it doesn't negatively impact hair health. Constant friction from the cap rubbing against your hair can cause breakage and split ends, especially if the cap is worn tightly. Wearing a cap for extended periods, particularly if it's tight, can limit air circulation to your scalp, leading to a buildup of sweat and oil. This can create a favourable environment for dandruff or fungal infections. If a cap is too tight, it can put pressure on the hair follicles, leading to a condition called traction alopecia, where hair is gradually pulled out, causing thinning or bald patches. Additionally, if the cap isn't clean, it can transfer dirt and bacteria to your scalp, potentially causing scalp issues.

To avoid these problems, ensure your cap fits properly—not too tight and not too loose. It should sit comfortably without putting pressure on your scalp or hair. Choose caps made from breathable materials like cotton to allow better air circulation and reduce sweating. Wash your caps regularly to keep them clean and free from sweat, dirt, and bacteria. Give your scalp a break by not wearing a cap all day and alternate between wearing a cap and leaving your head uncovered to allow your scalp to breathe. Maintain a good hair care routine, including regular washing and conditioning, to keep your hair and scalp healthy. By following these tips, you can minimise any potential negative effects of wearing baseball caps and keep your hair and scalp healthy.

One of the worst habits that can severely damage your hair and scalp is excessive use of heat styling tools. Regularly using blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons, and other heated styling devices can cause significant harm to both your hair and scalp. Here’s why:

Heat Damage: Constant exposure to high temperatures can weaken the hair shaft, leading to dryness, brittleness, and breakage. Heat damages the cuticle (the outer protective layer of the hair), making hair more susceptible to split ends and further damage.

Loss of Moisture: Heat styling strips the hair of its natural moisture, leading to dry and lifeless hair. This can make your hair appear dull and frizzy, and it can also cause the scalp to become dry and flaky.

Scalp Burns: Using heat styling tools too close to the scalp can cause burns and irritation. This not only damages the skin on your scalp but can also affect hair growth by damaging the hair follicles.

Weakened Hair Structure: Frequent heat styling can alter the natural structure of your hair, making it weaker and less resilient over time. This can lead to permanent damage and affect the overall health and appearance of your hair.

To mitigate these effects, it’s important to use heat styling tools sparingly and always use a heat protectant spray before styling. Additionally, opt for lower heat settings and allow your hair to air dry whenever possible. Incorporating regular deep conditioning treatments can also help restore moisture and repair some of the damage caused by heat styling. By adopting healthier hair care practices, you can maintain the integrity and vitality of your hair and scalp.
