Clinical Psychologist Dr Katie Baughan has offered some information on EMDR:
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help people heal from the emotional distress caused by traumatic or upsetting life experiences. Whether you're dealing with PTSD, anxiety, grief, or past trauma, EMDR helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel overwhelming.
When traumatic or upsetting life events happen, they are sometimes not stored like other memories. They can feel intrusive and can feel like you are reexperiencing the event again. There can be a sensory element to the memory (smells, sounds, physical sensations) and sometimes people will experience nightmares. Through bi-lateral stimulation (mostly eye movements) and structured phases, EMDR enables your brain to process and integrate stuck memories—allowing emotional healing to occur.
EMDR is a recommended psychological therapy by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and Matrix A Guide to Delivering Psychological Therapies in Scotland.
