Ricky Gervais has donated almost £2.5 million from his latest stand up tour to 22 animal charities across the UK, calling it his way of celebrating the spirit of Christmas.

The money will fund everything from paralysed dog rehabilitation in Kent to emergency donkey care in Gaza and the West Bank, with each charity receiving up to £150,000.

Gervais joked that his mum once told him you cannot take it with you, adding that giving it away now feels far better than spending it on speedboats.
