Greenshoots yoga Greenshoots yoga offers yoga and mindfulness classes to children aged 5-18 as well as families. This school specialises in trauma lead education.

I have been a primary school teacher for 19 years, working for 4 years at St Richards Primary School in Longsight and then 8 years at Alderley Edge School for Girls. When my boys were young I left full time teaching trained as a yoga teacher-for children aged 5 plus and Teenagers. I then started Greenshoots Yoga and in the past 7 years I have taught after school clubs, yoga in schools, as well as staff training in chair yoga and mindfulness. Currently I work as part of a pastoral team at a primary school in Trafford. I have recently completed an online Trauma sensitive course and continue to develop my training in this area. I am affiliated with Independent Yoga Network, in teaching children yoga and mindfulness. Yoga has been a fundamental part of my life for over 19 years now. In a society where expectations are high, from a young age, the yoga mat provides children with a place where they can have fun, express themselves creatively and develop their self-confidence. My aim is to give children the tools of yoga and mindfulness to draw on throughout their lives. For example; in times of emotional stress or academic pressure. Yoga and mindfulness help promote mental and physical resilience, which can be applied to everyday life. Mindfulness is also done throughout the lesson, via breathing exercises, reflection and reciting positive affirmations. We are a UKโ€based charity that, for over 15 years, has been training teachers, counsellors and youth workers to deliver yoga to adolescents in schools and beyond. Our approach is informed by neuroscience, adolescent psychological development, anatomy, physiology and the socioโ€emotional challenges teens face.

How it helps in school settings
โฎ• Reduces anxiety, stress and tension. Our practices - breathwork, mindfulness, movement - help students calm their nervous systems, giving them tools to manage the overwhelm of exams, transitions, social anxiety.
โฎ• Improves focus and behaviour. By slowing things down (even for a few minutes), students become more able to attend to lessons, regulate impulses and respond rather than react.
โฎ• Raises emotional awareness. We help young people name their feelings, notice patterns, build selfโ€control rather than acting out.
โฎ• Supports wholeโ€school wellbeing. Rather than being an add-on, we offer โ€œwhole school approachโ€ models, integrating yoga into the curriculum, tutor time, PE, or PHSE, which amplifies the benefits and embeds wellbeing culture.

There was a beautiful atmosphere of parents and children being present with eachother...and not a screen in sight.

Why yoga saves me time and time again...amongst other bolstering pillar stones such as friends and family.

-yoga helps me sleep as it facilitates me tuning into any difficult emotions ( past or present) and release them...through movement, stretching and breath work.

-it helps to still my very active mind..( I am on the creative side and can create so many scenarios..I really should be an author!)

-it strengthens my core and improves my deportment.

-it helps me to support my children with their own emotions.
..and when I mess up and yep this happens..I forgive myself, learn and unravel myself on the mat once again.

After a small procedure involving stitches on my shoulder I have to give it a break for a few weeks-which makes appreciate it even more!

I'm lucky enough to share this gift/ tool with others and constantly receive feedback from pupils in the school I work at on how yoga and mindfulness help children navigate real emotions, empowering them for life.
