Concerned about scrotal swelling? You're not alone.

Hydrocele is one of the most common causes of painless testicular swelling in men and it's very treatable.

Mr Stephen Brown, Consultant Urological Surgeon in Manchester, discusses what you need to know about hydrocele surgery.

A hydrocele is a fluid-filled sac around the testicle that can cause discomfort and swelling over time. Hydrocelectomy is a routine day-case procedure performed under general or local anaesthetic, with most men back to normal within a few weeks. Early assessment is always recommended. Left untreated, hydroceles can grow and become increasingly uncomfortable.

Mr Ata Jaffer at Manchester Urology was delighted to host the very first HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) training course for urology trainees at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, bringing the next generation of urologists one step closer to mastering this gold-standard, minimally invasive procedure for treating an enlarged prostate.

The day featured two live surgical cases, giving trainees real-time exposure to operative technique, decision-making, and navigating intraoperative challenges, the kind of hands-on experience that truly shapes a surgeon.

A huge thank you to our brilliant faculty and organisers, and to our industry partners for their generous support in making this possible.

Investing in training today means better outcomes for patients tomorrow.

Today Professor Ian Pearce at Manchester Urology discusses urodynamics, a straightforward outpatient test that helps us understand how the bladder stores and passes urine. Using very small catheters, we measure bladder pressures while it fills and empties, helping identify the cause of symptoms such as urgency, leakage, or difficulty voiding. The test is quick, well tolerated, and provides essential information to guide personalised treatment. In selected cases, video urodynamics or perineal ultrasound can offer even deeper insight into bladder and pelvic floor function.
