Today Professor Ian Pearce at Manchester Urology discusses urodynamics, a straightforward outpatient test that helps us understand how the bladder stores and passes urine. Using very small catheters, we measure bladder pressures while it fills and empties, helping identify the cause of symptoms such as urgency, leakage, or difficulty voiding. The test is quick, well tolerated, and provides essential information to guide personalised treatment. In selected cases, video urodynamics or perineal ultrasound can offer even deeper insight into bladder and pelvic floor function.

Today Professor Ian Pearce discusses Overactive Bladders.

An overactive bladder is a condition that can affect both men and women and it’s more common than many people realise.

It’s characterised by:

💧 Needing to urinate frequently during the day and night
⚡ A sudden, strong urge to pass urine
🚽 Sometimes even leakage before reaching the bathroom

While it can occasionally be caused by issues like urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder cancer, in most cases there’s no clear cause, which can make it particularly frustrating for patients.

🔍 How do we find out what’s going on?Investigations may include:
* Blood and urine tests
* A bladder scan or flow test
* A cystoscopy (to inspect the bladder)
* Or urodynamic studies (pressure tests)

💊 How is it treated?
Treatment usually follows a stepwise approach:
1️⃣ Lifestyle changes such as adjusting fluid or caffeine intake
2️⃣ Medications to relax the bladder and reduce spasms
3️⃣ Botox injections or nerve stimulation if tablets don’t help
4️⃣ Surgery only in rare cases

You don’t have to live with constant urgency or worry. There are effective treatments available so speak with a urologist if you’re experiencing these symptoms.
