Lancashire Combined Events 2026 - Blackpool:

The group had 8 athletes competing over the Weekend and we produced a total of 20 PBs across a multitude of events. I am extremely pleased with this Outcome for a multitude of reasons: It is early season; the weather on the first day was far from ideal with cold, very strong winds; a lot of our athletes are still very young and inexperienced; athletes were doing Quadrathlons, Pentathlons, Heptathlons, Octathlons for the very first time and some events were being done for the very first time in Competition....etc etc Watch this space as there is a lot more to come from the group as the season progresses.

Congratulations to all the athletes and as always thank you to the parent group for your continued support!

Trafford Open medal meeting: Bella has got us off to a flier with a PB in the 75m Hurdles!; followed by a PB by Violet in Long jump!; 200m PB by Abbie; Will B a Long Jump PB and Rowan an 800m PB!!! I'm also really pleased with Outcomes such as Abbie achieving 3 strides in the Hurdles at her new distance and Flo competing for the very first time in an Outdoor T&F Competition! I also like the fact that individuals are broadening their experiences across a number of different events!

Wow! Our training group has just come out of it's Endurance training block and transitioning to more Power work and at their first Outdoor T&F Competition today at Trafford, they produced an enormous number of 19 PBs across a multitude of events: Shot, Javelin, Discus, Long Jump, High Jump, 75m, 150m, 600m & 800, An absolute fantastic start to the season and so much more progress to look forward to, on many fronts. I am also delighted that we introduced Evelyn, Eadie & Violet to Outdoor T&F today. They impressed me tremendously with the way in which they took it all "in their stride"!

Congratulations to all the Primary School Children who competed during the Winter months, in the most grueling of events, that is Cross Country, in all sorts of tough conditions. A great way to build real mental & physical strength, Resilience, robustness in the development of any Sportsperson is essential!

Are the fantastic Outcomes such as the 3rd place achieved by Zari this Winter, down to early specialization in Endurance running......absolutely NOT! This young athlete is following the long term athlete development model advocated by UK Athletics and tomorrow she will compete in 3 Power events in her first Outdoor T&F Competition of the season!!

I am incredibly Proud of Zari and all the young athletes in the group who commit so incredibly well to spreading themselves very thinly, across a large number of events, from a very young age, in order to achieve fantastic Long Term ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT! The Outcomes they achieve are so incredibly well deserved!

I'm delighted with all the feedback that I received from yesterday's last Primary School XC race of the season at Woodbank Park. I'm very proud of all our athletes who get involved in this toughest of events that develops excellent physical & mental strength in the youngest within our training group.

The last Primary School XC race of the season is tomorrow and I am really proud of all our young Combined Event athletes who have used these races as part of their Endurance training over the Winter months.

I am delighted that as a group we have introduced these races to individuals, who had previously never done XC and I'm glad to hear that they have enjoyed the new experience as part of their DEVELOPMENT!

I hope that on this occasion I am allowed to highlight our Year 6s for which tomorrow will be there final ever race as Primary School athletes. The Outcomes that I highlight below speak for themselves, whether it be final finishing positions or best ever results achieved. What I would like to stress is the PROCESS by which these Outcomes are being achieved. The attitude for a start, by this young group of athletes, to their Endurance training, is absolutely Phenomenal. Secondly, these athletes do not turn up for training and just do Endurance, Early Specialisation is not what we believe in for a multitude of reasons. They are all Combined Eventers and will remain so during their DEVELOPMENTAL years. As such and just as one example, Flo, Jack, William & Zari were NOT doing an Endurance session on Monday, they were working on their Speed, Flexibility (mobility), Coordination and Strength (Plus many other things!!) through a sprint hurdles session.......William & Zari then went on to a Shot session on Tuesday.....etc etc If you then throw into the equation winter illnesses; niggly injuries (mainly growth related); frequency of training.........etc etc etc then I'm sure you will all agree with me that the results below from our year 6s are really Outstanding! Congratulations Flo, Zari, Will, Jack & Harry!!!! These results should serve as real inspiration to the whole group!

I am extremely Proud of you and thank you for keeping to a well planned & defined Training & Competition schedule that has the Long Term as it's Priority. I once heard a coach say " I have a fantastic endurance athlete who is 20 years old...........How do I get her into Steeplechase!?" You won't need to ask that question with regard to the athletes below as they have been doing Endurance & Hurdling from a very young age!!!

I hope we have a massive turn out from the group tomorrow and Enjoy the event for ALL THE RIGHT REASONS!

Finally, a massive thank you to Stockport Harriers who continue to organise this fabulous event/opportunity for young athletes in the area!

Delighted with how our Half Term Training has gone and we have made good progress with many events - HJ, LJ, Shot, Javelin......etc etc. We are still in February, but for those training consistently & frequently it's looking really good for the upcoming Outdoor T&F season. The week ended on a lovely note today, when Hannah Nuttall, just crowned UK athletics 3000m indoor champion spent some time with the group! Thank you Hannah and all the very best for the rest of the Indoor Season and the rest of the athletic year!

Probably the wettest and coldest conditions we have trained in this winter with underfoot conditions really testing. The group will certainly have taken their endurance fitness to another level today!

So So So Proud of a young group of Combined Event athletes who get out there and mix it with Early Specialisation Endurance athletes in order to work on their aerobic energy system; mental strength and all round fitness: The endurance training today took place at the Heaton Park MACCL and Woodbank Park Park Run:

Over the last two weekends there have been so many different successes and progressions within the group. Some have competed for the first time at; the Northern XC Championships; the Greater Manchester Schools XC Championships.......done a Park Run for the first time. There have been a number of endurance PBs achieved and as a Combined events group who don't early specialise in Endurance some of the places achieved are outstanding. I'm not into building adult aerobic engines in children and recognise that SPEED is in fact KING whilst developing young athletes. As such Rowan & Abbie have both competed indoors in the Northern Championships!

Absolutely delighted with the DEVELOPMENT of certain members of the group who are keeping very close to the LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT MODEL advocated by UK Athletics.

Another great Weekend of Athletics from introducing Primary school athletes to XC (Nadia & Josh) to getting great Outcomes in the event with Top 10 finishes from Flo (2nd), Zari (3rd) & Jack (3rd) to Abbie & Rowan going indoors and achieving 600m & 60m PBs respectively......to others doing Park Runs and achieving PBs (Emmeline). Extremely Proud of the group and by the commitment to good Process being demonstrated by many. Congratulations to all who got out there this weekend and competed and worked on their fitness!
