Stockport Athletics Coaching

Stockport Athletics Coaching We are an inclusive, multi-event, athletics training group, for all ages. Based in Stockport, we train at Woodbank Stadium. Priced at only £4 per session

Based in Stockport, we train at Woodbank Athletics Stadium & Park. The coaching and training approach is athlete centred and is focused on developing fundamental movement skills and technique across eight different events. This is achieved through variety, in a constructive, organised, progressive manner, within a FUN, encouraging and positive environment. Running, Jumping and Throwing are the foundations on which all Sport is dependent. Therefore, if you see yourself as the next Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah, Robin Van Persie or Andy Murray – a multi-event Athletics approach will help you with your overall development requirements and sporting ambitions. If, however, the aim is to keep fit & healthy; have some fun; be part of a training group and make new friends, then our group offers this as well. Everyone is welcome.

As a Combined Events group, I am absolutely delighted with these endurance training results. The Outcomes are outstanding whether they be finishing positions or getting young primary school athletes to do an outdoor healthy activity, that can stay with them throughout their lives for their health and well being. It's not about the here and now, it's about the long term and ensuring that No opportunities are denied in the future for this young group of athletes. Congratulations to: Flo larking (2nd), Zari Daniels (3rd), Jack Cheshire (7th), Harry Longbottom (24th), William Boothby (28th), Isaac Lea (33rd), Thomas Marks (40th), Alfred Critchlow (64th), Frazer Torevell (71st) and Alex Hope Shelley (103rd).

Putting things into even more perspective, we are at the end of October and we are still focusing on Power eg. Alex was doing High Jump at training last night. Considering the majority of these athletes train for just 1 or two hours a week and are spread thinly across a wide range of events and it is clear why I am so proud to be coaching every single one of them!!

MACCL match 1 - Woodbank Park: Extremely proud of this young group of athletes. All the athletes in these photos, have been doing Combined Events through the Summer and are now transitioning to an Endurance block of training, for a multitude of beneficial, long term reasons. FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS there is NO early specialisation taking place here!

Outdoor T&F report 2025:
As a Non-Elitist group, we have young developing athletes with varied amounts of ability, desire, commitment, seriousness, understanding……… when it comes to their athletic development. As such some: just train for 1 or 2 hours a week; some compete and others don’t; some prioritise other Sports; to many their academic requirements are a major priority; others come along to be part of a group and to socialise…….and others come along to maintain a level of fitness……..etc etc etc
Taking all of the above into account and the constant disruptions (avoidable & unavoidable) that take place from many different sources, that have an adverse effect on our Training & Competition plans and it becomes very apparent, that in many cases, “full potential” is not unfortunately being achieved, from an athletic or whole child development perspective.
With all of this in mind, as lead coach, I am delighted with this set of results, which I am not going to assess in detail, as I very much believe that they speak for themselves. The only point that I will make, is that 9 out of the 10 athletes at the Club, who have competed in Combined Events this year (Pentathlons & Heptathlon) have been from our group. This highlights our commitment to the LONG TERM athlete DEVELOPMENT model, advocated by UK Athletics, which ensures that Early Specialisation is not taking place and that future opportunities are not being denied to young developing athletes:

Last Trafford Open meeting of the season:

Congratulations to Sam, Will B, Bella, Abbie, Alfred, Rowan and Bessie who between them achieved a total of 10 PBs. That isn't 10 PBs just in Running, Just in Jumping, Just in Throwing......we don't do Early Specialisation.......for All the RIGHT REASONS!!!

The PBs ranged from 75m to 600m, from Long Jump to Discus to Javelin to Shot and to Hurdles!!

Extremely Proud of the young People who I Coach, who accept the challenge and don't opt for the easy options. Incredibly Important to them in terms of their whole child and athletic development. This is not about an "Introduction" to Athletics, it's about LONG TERM Whole child and athlete DEVELOPMENT. Some can't seem to grasp or understand that concept........I'm glad to be working with those who do!

Extremely Proud of Abbie Fitzgerald who yesterday completed her second Pentathlon, at National level, down in Chelmsford. Abbie was selected by Greater Manchester to compete, in the Regionals, earlier in the year. The Greater Manchester team won the Regionals to qualify for yesterday's ESAA U15 Girls Combined Events National final. 42 girls were competing and Abbie came 26th despite a couple of events not going to plan.

We have a long and rich pedigree of producing athletes who wear the orange & blue of Greater Manchester and I am delighted that Abbie is part of that long list and is gaining such wonderful competition experiences from an early age.

Congratulations Abbie from everyone at Stockport Athletics Coaching on this achievement at a National level!

As we come to the end of the 2025 Outdoor T&F season I am delighted with what the group continues to achieve in a Non-elitist manner. There is No Early Specialisation going on in this group in Power or in Endurance:

A few members of the group competed last weekend in the LAG YDL at Sportcity before we go into our Summer Training schedule and try and finish our Outdoor Track & Field season on a high by the end of September. Thank you to Fiona Johnson who is doing a fabulous YDL Team manager job.

I am delighted with the Outcomes being produced through, a unique to Stockport, training model that is following the LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT MODEL advocated by UK Athletics. There is No Early Specialisation taking place within the group; No future event opportunities are being denied and ALL 5 fitness components are being worked on simultaneously. The results speak for themselves:

Massive Congratulations to Abbie on her Pentathlon PB that helped the Greater Manchester team win the Regional final and send the Junior Girls Team to the Nationals!
Abbie finished in 6th place and was second counter for the team. The day didn't start off great, as Abbie hit the very first hurdle, but recovered really well to finish the race. It could have been an alot better start with a massive PB! I was seriously impressed with how she then proceeded to focus on the next 4 events and produce some excellent performances. I was particularly delighted with her Process in Shot, Long Jump & the 800m in which she won her heat comfortably! Congratulations Abbie from the whole group, really well deserved! See you in Chelmsford!

Congratulations to Rowan (Cheshire) & Will & Arthur (Greater Manchester) who represented their Counties at the ESAA Regional Combined Events finals in the Junior Boy Pentathlon. In what were tricky warm & windy conditions the Boys produced 8 PBs between them on the day!

24/06/2025

Sorry No photos from Trafford's Open meeting on Saturday but plenty of success in different forms. William was competing at club level for the first time; Bessie was competing in Shot for the first time and the group achieved 9 PBs on a muggy, warm day! Congratulations Abbie, Imogen, Zari, Bessie, William, Jack, Flynn, Rowan and it was great to see Rhys out there producing a Sprint PB!
