Celebrate the return of the light with the Winter Solstice.

The Winter Solstice marks the passing of the longest night and the beginning of the days getting longer.

One of the simplest ways to mark the Winter solstice is by lighting a candle.

🕯️Lighting a flame reminds me that the long nights are part of the cyclical rhythm of the seasons. It is a transitional phase only - necessary to move towards Spring and Summer. It will pass.

🕯️As I gaze at the flame it reminds me to tend to the light I carry within. How can I nurture my own energy, enthusiasm and zest for life?

🕯️The light brings hope for the coming New Year

What can you do to bring light into your life this solstice time?

Invitation to pause and breathe

Without any strain or effort take five deep breaths. Allow each breath to travel down to the abdomen and be aware of the lungs filling with air.

Now take five more breaths.

How do you feel? How do you really feel?

I find that this is a great technique to do to calm and soothe the body and mind. What do you think?

Give yourself the gift of song.

Sing out your favourite carol or Christmas song. Sing for the pleasure and the joy of it. No need to worry what it sounds like. This is just for you. Fill your lungs and let your song lift your spirits.

Singing for me is a natural breathing practice. When you sing your breath naturally deepens and slows allowing both a re-energisation to take place and promoting a more relaxed state.

I quite often sing or chant while I am walking. I sing out loud when I am on my own or silently to myself if others are around. Over the last couple of years I have been reconnecting with singing with others. I have found it a lovely experience. Singing in community has a vibrant cohesive energy. Although we might all be singing in different parts, we sing as one bringing balance and unity.

"The time to relax is when you don't have time for it"
- Sydney J Harris

In the run up to Christmas it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of the season - whether that is preparations for Christmas Day itself or going to carol concerts, nativity plays, Christmas markets and all the other personal traditions that we want to experience and take part in at this time of the year.

It can feel counter intuitive to rest when you are really busy, but this is exactly why you should make space to rest and relax.

Some of my favourite ways to rest and relax are:

❤ Snuggle down with a book and a cup of tea

❤ Lie down and practice yoga nidra

❤ A few minutes of abdominal breathing

❤ Remembering to give myself time to pause between activities

❤ Or you could come along to one of my festive retreat offerings. Link below.

Thai yoga massage uses assisted stretches like this cobra pose to release tension through the neck, shoulders and back.

I know this looks quite strong, but it's actually a gentle, supported stretch. I guide you into the position gradually, and you remain completely passive - I'm doing all the work.

Every treatment is tailored to the individual. I only use stretches like this when they're appropriate for your body and what you need. For some people, this kind of stretch can be deeply releasing. For others, gentler approaches work better.

If you're carrying tension in your upper body, Thai yoga massage might help.

I currently offering appointments on Saturday 29th November and 6th December as well as my regular Thursday and Friday appointment slots. You can find out more and book your place here https://www.yogatherapystockport.co.uk/massage-therapies/

Breathe Easy...

Your breath has the power to nourish your life force, energise you from within or to promote deep relaxation. It is one of the simplest ways you can affect your body.

Try this simple technique to encourage deeper breathing, increase oxygenation to your body and calm the nervous system.

Breathe like a baby:

- Lie on your back, with your feet on the floor and your knees bent.

- Allow your body to relax, and then tune in to your natural breathing pattern. Just let your breath flow easily.

- Place your hands on your abdomen, with the fingertips just touching at the navel.

- Imagine that you can follow your in breath down into the belly and back out from the belly as you breathe out.

- Feel your abdomen expand and rise with each inbreath (you might notice that the fingers gently separate).

- As you breath out be aware of the abdomen softening and releasing downwards (you might notice that the fingertips come back towards each other).

Practice for a few minutes at a time and notice how your breathe becomes smoother, your your body more relaxed and your mind calmer.

There might have been sunshine today but the recent wet weather is perfect for breaking down the fallen leaves and releasing their nutrients into the soil. It is a necessary phase to ready the ground for next year's growing season.

Taking inspiration from this natural process, you too can start to break down your year and reflect on the past 11 months. Can you draw the wisdom and teachings out of your experiences?

What insights could you take into next year?

Free Thai yoga massage taster sessions

This Saturday (15th November) I am offering free 15 minute taster sessions in my therapy space at Lentils and Lather in Marple.

If you are unfamiliar with Thai yoga massage, it takes place fully clothed while lying on a futon on the floor. It combines smooth, flowing movements to press and stretch the whole body combined with assisted yoga postures. It is deeply relaxing and therapeutic.

If you are curious then either come along on Saturday or message me direct if you want to book a specific time.
