🪶Bereavement Support Group Socials

Our Bereavement Support Group has been active for nearly five years now, and we are truly delighted that it continues to provide valuable support to so many individuals.

During our monthly meetings and beyond, wonderful and supportive friendships have blossomed.

Last week, we were thrilled to organise another Bereavement Support Group Social. Based on a recommendation from one of our members, we chose to meet at The Aviator in Woodford.

Sarah, Barbara, and Debbie from Alcocks/Hills were accompanied by over 15 group members, all of whom enjoyed a beautiful, sunny afternoon filled with delicious food and great company.

If you think our Bereavement Support Group might help you or someone you know, please do join us. The group takes place on the first Tuesday of every month at Hazel Grove Baptist Church, from 10am until 12noon.

Everyone is welcome, whether you have used our services or not. We meet in the warm cafe area of the church and drinks and cakes/ biscuits are provided. It is a lovely, welcoming, informal group.

Our next group is on Tuesday 7th April.

If you would like more information please do call us on 0161 428 2097 or email adminteam@jasfunerals.co.uk.

📜Our History - Part 8

Over the coming months, we have been delighted to share the long and rich history of Jonathan Alcock and Sons.

This week, we look at how the 1970s brought some not insignificant changes to the family firm.

In the November of 1970, Chris Parker (Jonathan’s great-grandson) married Barbara Sharrocks, and they welcomed two children, Anthony in 1974 and Sarah in 1977.

During this period, changes in the building industry led to large-scale developers and national construction firms dominating the market, resulting in a decreased demand for local tradespeople.

With this in mind, the family made the significant decision to concentrate solely on the ever-growing funeral side of the business.

Consequently, they decided to sell the workshops that had once driven the building arm of the firm to N. Taylor and Sons. This sale marked the end of an era for Alcocks, but provided clarity about the future direction of the family firm.

⚜️Our Price Promise for 2026⚜️

This year, we are committed to keeping our professional service prices consistent with those of 2025.

Whilst third-party costs and disbursements are outside our control, our professional charges are not.

Therefore, we have taken the decision to absorb the price increases ourselves, rather than passing them on to the families we serve. And so our professional charges will remain at the same rate as they were in 2025.

We recognise that the rising cost of living impacts everyone, and by maintaining our prices, we hope to provide some relief and stability to those we serve.

Our commitment to putting families first is unwavering, and we ensure that every decision we make reflects our dedication to the community.

Our Price Promise stands as a testament to this commitment, as we strive to deliver the best value without compromising on quality or service.

Thank you for continuing to entrust us with the care of your loved ones.

Coffins🕊

A coffin (or casket) serves as the resting place for your loved one during their funeral. Traditionally, coffins have a tapered shape - narrower at the head and foot - while caskets are usually rectangular.

Today, there’s a wide variety of options to suit every style and budget. You can choose from:
-Classic wooden designs for a timeless look
-Vibrant, colorful, and themed styles for a unique tribute
-Personalized and intricate models for something truly special
-Eco-friendly and naturally woven coffins for a sustainable choice

Over the weeks, we have been highlighting some of the beautiful coffin ranges available, so you can see what resonates with you and your family.

This week, we are featuring personalised and bespoke coffins. The variety of coffins currently available, along with customisation options, allows families to create a unique tribute by adding personal touches.

This can include custom imagery, photographs, specific colours, engravings, favourite quotes, and even non-traditional shaped coffins. This personalisation ensures that each farewell is as unique as the individual being remembered. Most specialist manufacturers offer these coffins in a range of materials, including traditional wood, eco-friendly cardboard, and wicker.

For those with specific faiths, religions, beliefs, or cultural backgrounds, there are coffin designs that can reflect and incorporate these wishes.

Many of these coffins are suitable for both burial and cremation. Your appointed Funeral Director will be able to advise and support you in selecting a choice that feels meaningful and comforting for your family.

Next week, we will be featuring Metal/American Caskets.

❓Did you know...❓

We can help you to find the perfect wake/funeral reception venue and/or caterer.

Many families hold a funeral reception or wake after their loved ones’ funeral service; this is an opportunity to continue celebrating the life of your loved one and to share treasured memories.

Our team understands that planning such an event can be a delicate and emotional process, and we're here to ease the burden during this difficult time. We strive to support you every step of the way, ensuring that the reception reflects the personality and preferences of your loved one.

Whether you envision an intimate gathering or a larger celebration, we are committed to helping you create a meaningful and comforting experience for all who attend.

Traditionally, refreshments would be on offer for the mourners; many tend to opt for a buffet style, though you may prefer a more formal sit-down meal or wish to serve your loved one’s favourite food.

📜Our History - Part 7

In recent months, we have been sharing the long and rich history of Jonathan Alcock and Sons. This week we look at how Bob Parker became head of the family firm.

In 1961, John died - confident that the business he had inherited and nurtured was secure in the hands of his capable son-in-law, Bob.

Bob became Managing Director of Alcocks, and he, along with Sylvia and their three sons, remained living at Brook House, successfully blending family and business life.

During this time, Chris, the eldest son of Bob and Sylvia, qualified as a Funeral Director - joining the National Association of Funeral Directors and the British Institute of Embalmers. These respected professional achievements reflected the family's commitment to high standards. Their son, John, later joined the building arm of the firm.

This was a significant moment, marking the next generation’s entry into the family business.

📜Our History - Week 6

Over the coming months, we are excited to share the long and rich history of Jonathan Alcock and Sons.

This week, we will explore how George’s passing signified the transition to a new generation of Alcock and Sons, which incorporated the Parker family.

In 1942, George Alcock, Jonathan’s son, passed away, leaving his brother John to manage the family business on his own. During some of the most challenging years of the Second World War, Jonathan Alcock and Sons became a vital support for the community. Throughout this period, John maintained the reliable and compassionate service everyone had come to expect.

Away from the pressures of work, the Alcock household was preparing for happier times, with John’s daughter, Sylvia, set to marry Robert ‘Bob’ Parker on her 22nd birthday in August 1942.

Bob was a well-respected Police Officer with Cheshire Constabulary. Following his marriage to Sylvia, he made the significant decision to leave the police force and join his in-laws at thier family firm.

In the years that followed, Bob and Sylvia welcomed three sons: Christopher in 1946, John in 1951, and Andrew in 1953, ushering in the next generation of Alcock/Parkers to continue the family legacy.

In the coming weeks, we’ll showcase some of the beautiful ranges available, so you can explore what feels right for you and your family.

This week we are showcasing Wooden Coffins.
Wooden coffins are a popular choice for many families. They can be crafted from solid wood - such as oak, mahogany, or pine - for a classic and elegant appearance, or made with wood veneer for a more affordable option. These designs offer a timeless look that many people associate with the traditional idea of a coffin. Most wooden coffins are suitable for both burial and cremation, making them a versatile and practical choice.
