The "11-Month" Daily Lens 😱

​The Story: A patient came in with a red, blurred, and sore eye. At first glance, it looked like an early dendritic corneal ulcer (cold sore virus) or a embedded fibre. But after a closer look, we found the culprit: a daily contact lens that had been sitting on her eye for nearly a year! 🗓️

​She had bought them online and last wore them to see a Peter Kay show back in February. She thought the had taken both lenses out that night. However it turns out that one of the lenses wasnt out!

​How lucky was she? 🍀
Honestly? Incredibly lucky. Leaving a lens in this long is a recipe for disaster. It could have led to:

1) ​A Sight-Threatening Infection: Bacteria love trapped, warm spaces. This could have easily turned into a microbial keratitis (a severe infection).

2) Corneal Oxygen Starvation: Corneas need to breathe! Long-term wear can cause blood vessels to grow into the eye or cause permanent scarring.

3) Severe Ulcers: What looked like a small mark could have become a deep, painful hole in the cornea.

​The Lesson:
1️⃣ Don’t skip your check-ups. Buying online without regular professional exams means "silent" issues go unnoticed.
2️⃣ The "Lost" Lens Myth: If you can’t find your lens, don’t just assume it fell out. If the eye stays red or blurry, come see us!
3️⃣ Dailies are for ONE day. Not 330 days.

It really was stuck on tight 🫣. ​We had to use tweezers to carefully lift and slide this one off because it had practically suctioned to the eye. Thankfully, we got it out just in time!
