FRAN RUNS TO FRANCE

I am supporting my neighbour and patient Fran on leg 1 of her charity run to raise money for Independent Choices Greater Manchester who support victims of Domestic Violence.

Obviously types of injuries will likely be vastly different but just as frustrating if you can’t play!

I always knew the importance of strength training but I'm not sure I really KNEW the importance of strength training!

Did you know...
- You start losing muscle fibres in your 30s?
- Muscle strength and mass is reported to reduce around 8-10% every decade!
- This accelerates in the 70s and can be as much as 3-4% a year!

However...
- Strength training can reduce sports injury risk by as much as 66%!
- Strength training can also improve sports performance.. for example one study found an 8% improvement in running economy equivalent to 2 and Β½ minutes on a 10K time!! (Lauersen et al, 2018; Papa et al, 2017; Park et al, 2022).
- Strength training also reduces risk of falls, the impact of conditions such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, improves cardiovascular health to name but a few!

This isn't new but thought it was a nice info graphic on physical activity.

A big cause of problems you see in Physiotherapy is related to inactivity. Prolonged sitting, taking the lift instead of the stairs and driving those short distances all lead to deconditioning. This includes joint/muscle stiffness and muscle weakness which can increase risk of injury.
