Clarity Autism Services

Clarity Autism Services It is possible that further assessment is not indicated. However, if assessment is required then we will develop an assessment plan with you.

We provide high quality autism assessments for children, young people and adults using ‘gold standard’ tools (e.g., ADI, 3di, ADOS 2) across the North-East of England. All of our assessments are compliant with NICE guidelines, which propose multiple recommendations regarding high quality assessments, including the use of a multidisciplinary team, observations across different settings & consideration of differential diagnosis. During a free consultation with a Clinical Psychologist, we will speak to you about your requirements and if appropriate consider differential diagnosis with you. Assessments can include taking a detailed developmental history, gathering information from school, an observation within school, a cognitive assessment, Speech and Language Therapy assessment and the ADOS-2. We can start the assessment within 2-4 weeks of your first contact with us and will guide you through every step of the process. The exact cost of the assessment will depend on which components are required to reach a conclusion in relation to diagnosis. This will be discussed with you following the initial consultation. Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSA) is rising—especially among autistic students.

This BBC article highlights how lack of flexibility with school policies, like limited toilet access, can create significant barriers to attending school - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1kv8vxzn99o

We recently used the ‘Drawing the Ideal School’ exercise with one child to ‘increase the volume’ of their voice and needs, and to consider a seemingly simple fix:

❓They were forced to choose between eating lunch or using the toilet (5 toilets for over 150 students).

✔️The solution? Leaving class two minutes early—so they didn’t have to choose.

Sometimes, the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference.

As professionals dedicated to autism assessment and support, we advocate for approaches that prioritize student well-being and actively involve them - to increase their voice - in shaping their educational experiences.

One girl says not having free access to the toilet was a factor in her decision to be home-schooled.

A big thank you to the Durham Centre for Academic Development @ Durham University for inviting Dr Patrick Welsh to their away day.

The workshop focussed upon the concept of neurodiversity and reasonable adjustments, with attendees making pledges at the end of the day to continue their personal development and knowledge in their roles.

Clarity Autism is proud to provide bespoke training packages focusing on autism and neurodiversity for organisations and institutions.

Following the HIFAMS questionnaire, here's another helpful exercise to understand how a child feels about school life - Drawing The Ideal School (Williams & Hanke, 2007)

This is particularly helpful when understanding emotionally based school avoidance, and things to consider that may aid any transition back to school 🤲🎓
