The General Optical Council has approved three final SPOKE projects to support the transition to updated education and training standards for optometry, dispensing optics, and specialist qualifications.

These include guidance on fitness to train and reasonable adjustments, a toolkit to help learners integrate into multidisciplinary teams, and support for learners from diverse backgrounds pursuing specialist qualifications.

New NHS data highlights stark disparities in ophthalmology waiting times across England, with patients in the most deprived areas more likely to wait over 52 weeks for treatment than those in more affluent regions.

For the first time, figures have been broken down by age, s*x, ethnicity, and deprivation level. In the most deprived areas, 1.9% of patients faced waits of a year or more for eye care—compared to 1.4% in the least deprived. Ophthalmology also accounts for the largest proportion of NHS waiting list cases among over-65s, making up 14% of this group.

𝐓𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 has officially received full approval from the 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 (GOC) for its BSc (Hons) Clinical Optometry and MOptom (Hons) Optometry degrees.

This marks a major achievement for the university, now recognised as the first in the North East to offer GOC-approved optometry programmes.

Students who successfully complete the BSc qualification can undertake a pre-registration training period with a practice before applying to the GOC for registration. The MOptom degree meets current GOC standards, enabling graduates to join the professional register immediately upon completion.

However, the BSc pathway is no longer accepting new students, as the university has moved to adapt to the GOC’s new education and training requirements.

Course lead for the MOptom at Teesside University, 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐲 described this as a “significant milestone” that will widen access to optometry education and support better eye care across the Tees Valley and beyond.

This development opens new pathways for aspiring optometrists in the region and helps address the growing demand for accessible, community-based eye care.

A new study from the University of Edinburgh has introduced an AI-based method to measure nearsightedness more precisely—enhancing the prediction of long-term risk for retinal detachment and other complications.

The metric, known as Fundus Refraction Offset (FRO), compares the retina’s appearance to what would typically be expected from a patient’s glasses prescription. Patients whose retinas appeared more myopic than expected faced a significantly higher risk of retinal damage.

Optical professionals: This tool offers a more refined way to assess myopia severity—enabling more personalised care and informed surgical decisions. Using data from over 9,300 UK Biobank participants, the study revealed a 50% increase in retinal disease risk for each step lower in the FRO score.

Dr Fabian Yii describes the findings as a major shift in how myopia risk should be managed.

The General Optical Council has confirmed a three-year extension to the Knowledge Hub—run by SPOKE—securing continued support for providers delivering Education and Training Requirements (ETR) through to July 2028.

With no national database currently in place, this quick 10-minute survey will help map out where support is available—and where it's missing. The findings will be vital in pressing healthcare commissioners to improve access to care.
