At a time when demand for enhanced services is growing, a decline in IP training may limit the profession’s ability to meet future patient needs. Expanding prescribing skills remains vital for relieving NHS pressures and delivering more comprehensive eye care.

The GOC’s 2025 Workforce and Perceptions Survey found that 20% of optometrists supervised pre-registration trainees in the past year, yet many highlighted workload and time management pressures as barriers to effective supervision. This raises concerns about how students are supported through to qualification.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬:
· 48% of optometrists reported that standard sight test times felt insufficient for safe patient care.

One of the most common questions optometrists raise when considering a new role or locum shift is: ⏱️ “𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨?”

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has opened a consultation on extending medicine responsibilities for optometrists and contact lens opticians. The proposals could allow eye care professionals to supply and, in some cases, administer a wider range of medicines for minor eye conditions in the community.

For optical teams, this represents a significant opportunity. Updates to the Human Medicines Regulations may enable access to new treatments for conditions such as conjunctivitis and certain topical anaesthetics used in contact lens fitting. The changes aim to reduce unnecessary visits to GPs or hospitals, easing pressure on primary and secondary care services.

This consultation forms part of the Government’s 10-Year Health Plan, which seeks to shift care out of hospitals and into the community, making the best use of skilled professionals closer to patients’ homes.

As families prepare for the new school year with fresh supplies and the essentials in place, there’s one vital step that can easily be overlooked: a sight test.

Clear vision is fundamental to a child’s ability to learn, focus, and grow in confidence. Yet many children begin school with undetected vision problems that affect their performance and well-being. To address this, Optometry Ireland is urging parents to make routine eye checks part of their back-to-school preparations.

𝐋𝐢𝐳 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐧, acting president of Optometry Ireland, explained that warning signs such as frequent eye rubbing, covering one eye, misaligned eyes, or difficulty seeing the classroom board should prompt an immediate visit to the local optometrist. “With timely support, many of these issues can be corrected, giving children the best chance to thrive both inside and outside the classroom,” she said.

To support healthy vision, parents are also encouraged to take practical steps at home: limiting screen time, encouraging outdoor play, and ensuring good lighting during study. These small measures can help reduce risks such as eye strain and the development of myopia.

Optometry Ireland has also highlighted the importance of ensuring children over the age of eight have continued access to timely eye care. While statutory eye care is available up to age 12, community-based optometry can play a vital role in reducing waiting times and supporting families during these key developmental years. The organisation has put forward a proposal for a public eye care programme for this age group, which, if implemented, would strengthen access and provide children with the ongoing support they need.
