Another GREAT day of education with the Institute of Performance Nutrition on Saturday with Dr Laurent Bannock and his team.

Some awesome talks by Dr Sally Waterworth, Alex Ritson and Mark Hearris!

However, the highlight of the day was having the privilege to listen to and learn from Professor Graeme Close, especially his talk discussing the work he did with England Rugby in preparation for the recent World Cup.

Following on from yesterdays post, I also spent Saturday in London attending the Guru Performance Institute's 'Performance Nutrition Update' Seminar.

It was an amazing day of learning, with talks and interactive sessions from the Guru Performance tutoring team; Dr Laurent Bannock, Alex Ritson, Dr Sally Waterworth and Stephen Smith.

I can genuinely say that it was one of the best 'education days' I have attended; learning the latest science on key topics and how to effectively apply this to professional practice.

I look forward to attending the next event later this year!

My apologies for being so quiet recently; however, I have been very busy putting certain plans in place as well as developing my knowledge and skills as a practitioner.

With this in mind, I am proud to state that I am currently a student of the Diploma in Performance Nutrition with the Guru Performance Institute.

The Diploma is one of the leading professional education programs you can undertake in Sport and Exercise Nutrition; it is taught by a team of practicing, highly qualified and experienced Performance Nutritionists.

It is a huge honour to be accepted on to the program and to have the opportunity to learn from such highly regarded individuals!

I'm currently 4 months in (still early days as it's a comprehensive program) and I can honestly say that my knowledge and confidence has grown massively as a result of what I have learnt so far.

Despite what you may hear, when it comes to weight loss, calories matter!

It was suggested that according to new research, the number of calories you eat could have nothing to do with your fat loss success.

HOWEVER, as Martin 'Nutrition' MacDonald states here, what the study actually showed is that dietary quality should not be ignored WHEN CUTTING CALORIES to lose weight.

Here we see a fine example from Woman's Health Magazine of why you should never trust the media when it comes to nutrition.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What an embarrassment to the industry they are. Come on WH! Get better journalists please!! What a terrible case of misreporting!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What this study ACTUALLY showed is that dietary quality should not be ignored WHEN CUTTING CALORIES to lose weight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I find it quite disgusting that this information is put out, which can completely disempower people from what ACTUALLY matters.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A bit like people gaining fat using The Body Coach’s recipe book that also ignored Calories.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why are so many idiots obsessed with trying to say Calories don’t matter?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even Keto zealot Tim Noakes admitted Calories matter!!!

EDIT: They have now made a SMALL change to the end paragraph... leaving the click bait, damaging first sentence. Not good enough WH.

According to new research, the number of calories you eat could have nothing to do with your fat loss success. ⠀

Instead, the study implies you should be focusing on:⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. The quality of your meals⠀
2. The number of processed ingredients in your diet⠀
3. Your intake of whole foods⠀

Remember, it's not how much you eat, but what you eat that counts.”

I still often read or hear people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it boosts/kick-starts metabolism.

To be honest, this is something I used to say myself.

So, how true is it?

Let me begin by stating that the act of eating (due to the thermic effect of food) does raise metabolism to 'some extent.'

However, the belief that skipping breakfast will result in a slower metabolism, especially over the course of 24 hours, is wrong and simply NOT supported by evidence.

In fact, the Bath Breakfast Study - Betts et al. (2014) showed that contrary to popular belief, there was no metabolic adaptation to breakfast.

In other words, skipping breakfast will NOT result in a reduction in metabolism!

Knowing this, along with understanding that the driving factor for weight loss is adherence to a calorie deficit, leaves the decision of whether or not to have breakfast down to personal preference and what will work best for you as an individual.

I hope this helps!
