❗️Meningitis B❗️
We are getting a lot of calls regarding the meningitis outbreak in Kent. An update from the UK health security agency is here. What is meningitis? Symptoms, risks and how to protect yourself – UK Health Security Agency
For practices, there are no changes to national guidance on the management of suspected meningococcal disease. Antibiotic chemoprophylaxis is being offered to:
All students who live on Canterbury campus
All staff who live or work in affected Halls of Residence
Anyone who attended Club Chemistry on 5th, 6th and 7th March
Close contacts who have been identified by UKHSA
At present, the outbreak is limited to that geographical area.
GP Practices are required to provide MenACWY vaccination to those aged 14 years up to their 25th birthday. This includes those who may have missed vaccination via the SAI programme, or those who are attending university for the first time (see NHS England » General practice vaccination and immunisation services: standards and core contractual requirements). Eligible patients must be under the age of 25 years at the time of vaccination. Men B vaccine is offered at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 1 year of age. Current routine UK imms guidance does not advise giving Men B vaccine after 2 years of age. However, we are aware that private pharmacies can offer the Men B vaccine.
Please raise an Anima request if you are unvaccinated and eligible according to the criteria above.
