We received some very sad news last week.

Our wonderful John who works at Birches Crematorium & Remembrance Park passed away very suddenly.

John had been at Birches before they even opened their doors to families, he was always a friendly face at The chapel doors and did pretty much all of the cremations in the early days.

John looked after your loved ones after their service here at The Old Chapel, with care and compassion along with his amazing team.

He was a brilliant man, funny, caring - he gave the best hugs.

John loved the work he did. Birches really are a family and we all miss him so much already.

Ay up Duck (and mouse!)

If you have been to the chapel you will probably know we have a lot of mice hidden around.

Families keep bringing them and hiding them when they are here! I found one today but I think there are two more!! 😂

They have also hidden lots of mini ducks! 🦆

I love this, it is especially lovely for the children who attend services here

If I ever mention I’m in here at night people always say…. Isn’t is creepy? Are you scared?

Never. It feels exactly the same as it does in the daytime to me. Peaceful and warm.

After a busy day I came in to clear up tonight and bring my new office drawer unit that the wonderful Oscar built for me today (without asking!) You might have seen him during services here. Good looking, polite, takes after his mum 😂😝😉

Thank you to all the families who have chosen our space to say goodbye in May. This month, we have had dogs in attendance, brandy toasts, sing alongs, cakes, brews tears, laughter and lots of hugs!

On Thursday night I had the pleasure of presenting ‘It’s YOUR Funeral’ talk at So-Sew W.I it fell at the right time, this week is Dying Matters week - we talked about options around funerals, embalming, and most importantly writing your own wishes down!

😂 Drama at the chapel! 😂

I ordered normal wheelie bin to get rid of the very small amount of waste we produce….. it’s literally teabags and hand towels….

😂😂😂

The irony of families saying ‘he always said just chuck me in the wheelie bin and put me out on a Tuesday’ is not lost on me today!

(They are bringing a smaller one☝️ hopefully!!)

At The Old Chapel we hold space for families to say goodbye.

From Funeral services to memorials, we are here to help make the day un-rushed, personal and special. There won't be another funeral leaving as you arrive, or coming directly in after you.

We also offer a full service with cremation package, a little bit more about how this works is detailed in the video below.

On Friday night we opened the doors to welcome in the Ceramic Sisters WI!

The lovely Isobel Whittaker Funeral Services was our Funeral Director for the evening and we cohosted my workshop ’It’s YOUR Funeral!’

We brought a coffin, Izzy’s Nans Ashes, mortuary make up (who knew that was even a thing?!) and lots of other interesting ‘stuff’ for everyone to have a look at.

We chatted about arranging a funeral, what happens after you die (with your body) and new options like human composting and water cremation.

And of course there was cake!
