It all started with a simple message from Roy asking if we could do something for people living with Parkinson’s. At BASE BODY FITNESS, we are big believers that fitness is for everyone, so we said YES. And that’s how our Parkinson’s Club was born in August 2020.
We created a new kind of fun fitness session, designed from scratch for our very own warriors.
The goal? Move a little, have fun, smile a lot (even when your muscles and your medication don’t allow you to smile) and always finish with a cuppa and a good chat. ☕😊
We didn’t have funding, support or a template to work from, just the guidance of Jenny, Maureen and Roy, a lot of passion, a lot of listening plus a lot of trial and error.
We learnt, we adapted and we kept showing up.
Why? Because we were told something that stuck with us: “when you’re hit with Parkinson’s, your circle of friends can shrink fast.” That hit home. So we built a safe space and a place of togetherness, where no one feels alone and where friendship grows instead of fades.
Today, World Parkinson’s Day, nearly 5 years later, we’re so proud of how much our Parkinson’s Club has grown. But also, what BASE BODY FITNESS (a small, local and independent Gym) has achieved: we’ve opened our doors to those with Parkinson’s and, just as importantly, to their partners and carers.
But the biggest win for us? Seeing their smiles. That’s the moment that makes everything worth it. That’s what keeps us going.
We have to give a massive shoutout to Jenny, who keeps the Parkinson’s Club at BASE BODY FITNESS running smoothly behind the scenes, with her usual brilliance and heart. We couldn’t do this without you. Thank you Jenny for your hard work and for always keeping us on our toes!!!
Our Parkinsons’s Club is on every Tuesday and Thursday at 13:30
We are more than just a Gym: we are the place to be! Be part of our amazing family!
