Say a BIG hello to Frankie Griffin who has raised an incredible £5,100 for us after climbing Mount Snowdon in memory of her Nan. 🌻

Little Frankie, aged six, decided to take on the mammoth challenge after we cared for her Nan, Karen Griffin, who passed away in July last year following a brave battle with cancer.

Frankie told dad Nick that she ‘wanted to help poorly people like Nannie’ – Nick’s mum.

And so, on July 10 this year – a year to the day since her Nannie died – Frankie lead a team of eight to the summit of Snowdon in blistering 32C heat.

Nick said: “Dougie Mac arranged home visits and the nurses that came out to mum and the advice they offered was superb - no question was too silly and they always seemed to say the right thing.
“Frankie was amazing and lead the team of eight. It was hard going but it was a real team effort and so many memories were made. We also took Mum with us and laid a photo under some rocks with a view that was worth the walk. I couldn't be prouder of my six-year-old little girl!”

Huge thank you to Frankie, Nick and the team for their incredible support and to everyone who donated to help raise a fantastic sum of money to support our services.

Meet Sarah – One of Dougie Mac’s longest-serving staff members 👋

During her 30 years working for Dougie Mac; Sarah has seen many changes within the hospice. As well as her professional connection, Sarah has also experienced the hospice from a personal point of view after both her parents were looked after by Dougie Mac.

Seeing the care from both perspectives - as a professional and as a relative - gave her a powerful insight into our care services.

“All the staff were serene and calm in what was a stressful situation and dealt with my mum with dignity – it was amazing to see. Working here for so long, everyone knows me but, in that moment, when I was grieving, they all treated me as they would any other relative losing a loved one. They were very respectful.

“I’ve always known the nursing staff do a fabulous job but to see it from the ‘other side’ was amazing.”

Our Story

Dougie Mac is the only adult hospice delivering excellent care for people approaching the end of their lives in North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding villages.

The hospice was established in 1973 and has grown over the years not only in size but also in the range and amount of care services available for local people. Our consultant led multi-disciplinary clinical team provide specialist palliative/end of life care for people living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses; as well as offering help and support for their families and carers. We do not charge for the care and help we provide, we rely on 75% of our income coming from voluntary donations each year with the rest provided by some statutory funding.

We have no association with any other organisation, even those national charities who share a similar name. Our ability to meet the needs of the community we serve is very dependent on the support of local people, groups, businesses and organisations. Our team of nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants, volunteers, chaplains, social workers, therapists, and support staff care for all the needs of our patients facing a terminal illness: physical, emotional, social and spiritual. Together we aim to help patients both at home and in the hospice to achieve the very best quality of life, whatever their life expectancy, days, weeks or months.
