Ready to take on an unforgettable challenge and raise money for an incredible cause? A charity skydive could be just the thing… 🪂

Here’s what Samantha from our Children’s Services had to say about her sky dive experience:
"I was really nervous getting into the harness and watching the safety briefing, but once I was in the plane my nerves disappeared. The clear blue skies and beautiful views made it one of the best things I’ve ever done — I’d absolutely do it again!
I chose to fundraise for the hospice because I work with the Children’s Care Team at Dougie Mac and see first-hand the incredible support provided to local families. If you’re thinking about doing a skydive, just do it — it’s exhilarating, freeing and an unforgettable way to raise money for charity."

Huge thank you and congratulations to supporter David James who has smashed his fundraising target by organising a night of entertainment in memory of his brother-in-law, Malcolm (Curly) Degg. 🌻

David organised a ‘Concert for Curly’ in memory of Malcolm who died two years ago following a cancer diagnosis. The concert- at Baddeley Green Club - was held to raise funds for Dougie Mac, after Malcolm received our care. The event raised a massive £2,360 – smashing David’s original target of £1,000!

David said: “Malcolm was Baddeley Greener and played football for the local club team. He was also a musician who played for various groups in the area. The two groups who played at the event were friends of Malcolm’s and we had a brilliant turnout of 190 people. We had some generous donations to our raffle and sold 500 tickets!”

Thank you for your support Baddeley Green!

Writing a Will isn’t always easy to think about but it’s one of the most important things you can do. 💛

During Make a Will Month this May, local solicitors waive their fees to write a basic Will when you include a gift - such as money, a percentage of your estate, or an item of your possession - to the hospice in your Will.

Leave a legacy that helps provide comfort, dignity and support for local adults, young adults and children facing a life-limiting illness in North Staffordshire.

Congratulations and a huge thank you to Victoria Hawkes who has raised an impressive £1,713.32 for us by holding a 12-hour bowlathon. 🎳

Victoria – spurred on by her partner who bowled for seven hours and friends – raised the money to say thank you for the care we are currently giving to her dad after a cancer diagnosis.

She said: “I decided to fundraise as my dad recently found out he has cancer and is on palliative care with Dougie Mac. When I read into the charity, I really wanted to raise money for adults and children in my dad’s situation and for their families and carers.

“I also did the event in loving memory of my Uncle Alan Nixon, Uncle Derek Hawkes and my Grandad George Hawkes who were all helped by Dougie Mac.”

Thank you for your incredible support, Victoria!

Huge well done to our Children’s Care Team who have been awarded a Glimpse of Brilliance award! 👏

Palliative Nurse Care Specialist, Chloe Thomas who works across the Royal Stoke University Hospital and our Children’s Services, who said: “This award is for recognition of valuable contributions to children and families in end-of-life care. Your dedication and compassion is evident throughout and truly inspiring.”

A Glimpse of Brilliance award is a recognition initiative, frequently used within the NHS and similar organisations, designed to celebrate staff members for outstanding daily work, kindness and dedication.

This reflects the excellence of our children’s services, a big well done to the whole team.

Dougie Mac supporter Andrew Challenor has raised more than £1,000 for the hospice after taking on an extraordinary challenge – climbing SIX volcanoes in South America. 🌋

The former soldier who owns Royale Boiler Services Limited said: “I have friends and employees whose families have been supported by Dougie Mac, so it’s a charity that means a lot to me. The climb was really tough, physically but I think more mentally. Reaching the top gave me a real sense of achievement – I was exhausted but very happy to have made it.”

Huge well done and Andrew for completing such an epic challenge! We're so grateful to you for your support in helping us continue to be there to care for and support local families facing a life-limiting illness.

Our Story

Dougie Mac is the only adult hospice delivering excellent care for people approaching the end of their lives in North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding villages.

The hospice was established in 1973 and has grown over the years not only in size but also in the range and amount of care services available for local people. Our consultant led multi-disciplinary clinical team provide specialist palliative/end of life care for people living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses; as well as offering help and support for their families and carers. We do not charge for the care and help we provide, we rely on 75% of our income coming from voluntary donations each year with the rest provided by some statutory funding.

We have no association with any other organisation, even those national charities who share a similar name. Our ability to meet the needs of the community we serve is very dependent on the support of local people, groups, businesses and organisations. Our team of nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants, volunteers, chaplains, social workers, therapists, and support staff care for all the needs of our patients facing a terminal illness: physical, emotional, social and spiritual. Together we aim to help patients both at home and in the hospice to achieve the very best quality of life, whatever their life expectancy, days, weeks or months.
