🌍Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, an international awareness day dedicated to raising understanding of digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities and impairments around the world. The campaign encourages everyone, from designers and developers to organisations and service providers, to think about how digital services, websites, apps and online information can be designed to work for everyone, regardless of ability.
Digital accessibility is not just about technology, it’s about equitable access to information, services and opportunities in a world where so much of our health care, support and communication happens online. Millions of people in the UK live with disabilities that affect how they interact with digital content, and simple design choices can make a big difference to usability, independence and inclusion.
For the NHS, accessibility matters for patients and staff alike: ensuring online appointment systems, patient information, self management resources, and health apps are usable for everyone supports better access to care, clear communication, and safer outcomes. Meeting digital accessibility standards is part of providing high quality, person centred services across primary care and beyond, because everyone deserves health information and care that is accessible, understandable and usable.
Today and every day, let’s champion inclusive design, support accessible digital health services, and recognise that accessibility is a key part of delivering equitable health care for all.
