This is something I see far more often than people realise…
Before assuming memory problems or dementia, it’s always worth checking something much simpler first.
Gemma shares a real story from the pharmacy that every family should read 💙

I was chatting to a patient’s daughter this week, and it really stayed with me.
She told me how her mum had been becoming quieter, more withdrawn… not joining in conversations the way she used to. The family started to worry — “Is it memory? Is it the start of something more serious like dementia?”
But when we checked her ears, they were completely blocked with wax.
After a simple earwax removal, everything changed. She could hear clearly again, started engaging, laughing, and felt like herself.
It’s something I see more often than people realise.
Hearing loss — even something as simple as earwax build-up — can sometimes be mistaken for confusion, memory problems, or withdrawal. And when someone can’t hear properly, they often start to pull away from conversations and social situations. Over time, that isolation can have a real impact on mental wellbeing.
If you’ve noticed a loved one:
• Asking people to repeat themselves
• Turning the TV up louder than usual
• Withdrawing from conversations
• Seeming confused or disengaged
…it might not be what you think.
Sometimes, it’s just their ears.
At Blythe Bridge Pharmacy, we offer gentle, professional earwax removal and ear health checks. It’s quick, safe, and could make a bigger difference than you imagine.
