New device to help people with Parkinson’s Disease regain their stride
https://walkingfootball.com/new-device-to-help-people-with-parkinsons-disease-regain-their-stride/?feed_id=22666&_unique_id=68541808cf8d2

Researchers are conducting the first-large scale trial of a device which could help people with Parkinson’s Disease to walk better.

Over 200 people with Parkinson’s at eight sites around the UK will test the use of a Functional Electrical Simulation (FES) device, which is already used by people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and those who’ve had a stroke to improve their walking ability.

The STEPS 2 trial is being led by Professor Paul Taylor at Salisbury District Hospital, working in partnership with the University of Southampton, University of Plymouth and the University of Exeter. It’s being funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)…

David Muskett, 72, from Bournemouth, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 10 years ago. He first took part in the trial at the beginning of June 2024 and has been using the FES device ever since. He says:

“Over the past two years walking has become increasingly difficult. The FES device has been an enormous help. It’s simple to set up, and I have been amazed at the difference it has made.

“Prior to using the device, walking was like wading through treacle. I have always been an active person, and having the FES device has made walking, golf and football a much more pleasurable experience. It has helped my balance, fitness and strengthened my legs.

“I play walking football with Dorset Parky Striders, which we formed in October last year. We all have Parkinson’s, but to see us all chasing a ball around the pitch you would never guess. There’s a tremendous camaraderie within the group, and it keeps us all fit.”

STEPS 2 follows a 2020 feasibility study (STEPS 1). In this smaller study, 64 people with Parkinson’s who had difficulty walking received FES in addition to standard care or standard care alone.

A significant number of those who’d received FES had increased walking speed and fewer falls. The results were echoed in interviews with the participants receiving FES, who reported improved walking ability, mobility and confidence.

Keeping active and connected with others as we get older can be of great benefit to our physical and mental wellbeing.

We use Walking Football (sometimes referred to as ‘Danderball’ in Northern Ireland) as our preferred way of looking after our bodies and minds.

• Danderball at Larne Leisure Centre (delivered by Community Sports Network) Monday 11am – 12pm FREE
• Danderball at Carrickfergus Amphitheatre Thursdays 10.30 – 11.30am

CALA Walking Football Club was formed in 2023 by a group of Over-50s who had been meeting for about a year, in an informal capacity, to participate in Walking Football sessions offered in Carrickfergus and Larne Leisure Centres.

Age UK Herefordshire & Worcestershire (H&W) are launching a second Walking Football session in Worcester, taking place every Thursday from 11am-12.30pm at King George V playing fields.

The session branded Strictly Walking Football, is open to men and women over the age of 50 and will focus on maintaining the rules of the sport to ensure that all participants enjoy the pace whilst keeping them fit and active.

Jan Blazak who has supported Age UK H&W with the development of the group says:

“We want to attract people who are not currently playing, maybe nursing injuries, or simply wanting to dip their toes and test it out. We also want it to become a social support for those attending and engender a camaraderie amongst the group.”

“It will run every week regardless of numbers and if we do not have enough for a game, we will do low scale fitness work and drills as we build it up. We will do a proper warm up and warm down around each session, but mainly we will have a bit of fun and a laugh!”

The first session will begin on Thursday 15th February from 11am-12.30pm at King George V playing fields, Ash Avenue, Worcester, WR4 9TL.

If you are looking to give it a go, you can attend your first session for free with the following sessions costing £4. To find out more about strictly Walking Football then please contact Age UK H&W and ask for Carley

Our Story

Background to Walking Football Limited

Whilst working in my company Online Business Support Ltd - which among other things developed new internet ventures - I attended a EuroFIT course run by the Stoke City Community Trust and Dr Christopher Bunn from the University of Glasgow.

The content of the course struck a chord with me as, if something like this had been available beforehand, it may have helped my father (who was a keen sports fan but due to age, spent more time in the pub than on the pitch!) to have lived longer.

I decided to devise a new internet project - incorporating what I had learned from EuroFIT and using my many years of off/online knowledge - that could help spread awareness about the health, diet, fitness and social benefits of Walking Sports to people online.
