Sometimes the biggest difference in a child’s life comes from ordinary moments.

A calm home after a difficult day.
Someone cheering them on at school.
A trusted adult who believes in them.

Different people bring different strengths to a child’s life.

Which of these do you think helps children thrive the most?

I share my personal journey as a former foster child and current foster carer for Evergreen. I discuss the painful misconception that foster children are shipped out at 18 because carers only do it for money. I open up about my own traumatic experience of being asked to leave my foster home on my 18th birthday with no explanation, and how I later discovered it was because my foster parents stopped receiving payment. I reflect on how this revelation shattered me more than the actual rejection, and how it shaped my understanding of why people hold these beliefs about foster care.

When your child is in the middle of a meltdown, it can look like defiance, disrespect, or manipulation, but what is actually happening is neurological, not intentional.

During a meltdown, the thinking part of the brain that handles logic, reasoning, and listening goes offline.
The amygdala, the brain’s alarm system, takes over and signals danger.
The body shifts into fight or flight, which means big emotions, a racing heart, and very little access to self control.
In that state, your child is not choosing to ignore you; they are overwhelmed.

This is why consequences in the heat of the moment rarely work. A child in fight or flight cannot process lectures, threats, or complex reasoning. What they need first is co-regulation. They need a calm presence, steady tone, physical safety, and connection. Your regulated nervous system becomes the anchor that helps their nervous system settle.

Once they are calm again, the thinking brain comes back online. That is when teaching works, when problem solving makes sense and when discipline can actually shape growth instead of just stopping behavior.

Love first does not mean no boundaries. It means we understand timing. We regulate first, and teach second.

And every time you choose to be the calm in their storm, you are not just ending a meltdown, you are building emotional resilience, strengthening attachment, and shaping a brain that will one day know how to handle hard things with strength and compassion. ā¤ļø
