{DESCRIBE}
How we talk to ourselves has a big impact on how we feel! Part of what we do when we are practicing mindfulness is describing our experience; however, they way we doe this is very intentional. We describe the experience we are observing in a factual way that drops the interpretations or assumptions we have.
The describe skill helps us to stay present and focused in the moment. You take an experience like drinking your coffee and say to yourself statements about what you observe: “The mug is hot. The liquid is brown. I like the smell of the aroma.”
We can also use the describe skill to label our emotions: “I am feeling angry that you did not return my call about hanging out this weekend”. When we are able to verbally label our thoughts and emotions we have more power over managing them.
We need to learn to not take our thoughts and emotions so literally. Just because you are experiencing them does not mean that they are facts. For example, feeling fear does not mean that there is an actual threat- fear is what we feel when we are uncomfortable; typically, this means we are doing something that is challenging us to step outside of our comfort zone.
