Head Injuries Don't Shout - They Whisper First!
Across the UK, we see approximately 123,000 hospital admissions for head injuries each year, that’s one every 4 minutes. Broaden that to all brain injuries, and it’s over 335,000 admissions annually.
What makes head injuries tricky is how deceptively normal patients can look. As emergency responders, we've seen it before - chatting, walking, “I’m fine” ... until they’re not. A slow bleed, rising pressure, subtle confusion… and suddenly it’s time-critical. Those early decisions - convey or not, monitor or escalate - really matter.
We’re balancing mechanism of injury, GCS trends, safeguarding, and gut instinct - often in noisy, chaotic environments. With increasing demand on UK ambulance services, the pressure to make the right call quickly has never been higher.
Head injuries remain a leading cause of death and disability in under-40s, and the long-term impact can be life-changing — not just for patients, but for families too.
So today’s reminder for any First Responders:
👀 Look twice, not once - look beyond the obvious
🧠 Respect the mechanism
📈 Watch for subtle changes
🗣️ Trust your instinct — and advocate for your patient
Because sometimes the quiet ones are the ones that count most.
Stay safe, stay sharp.
