Mental Health Matters! 🧠

Mental Health Awareness Week (11th–17th May) is an important reminder that mental health matters just as much as physical health.

With 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing a mental health problem each year, creating supportive workplaces and communities has never been more important. Sometimes, simply knowing how to recognise the signs and start a conversation can make a real difference.

At Abacus Training, our Mental Health First Aid courses are designed to give individuals and organisations the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills to support others appropriately and promote positive wellbeing in the workplace.

Delivered by highly experienced trainers with real-world emergency service backgrounds, our courses provide practical, relevant learning that can help create healthier, more supportive working environments.

Because mental health awareness shouldn’t last just one week. 💙

Feedback Friday: Every Question Matters! 💬

This week’s Feedback Friday is a simple but important reminder of why open communication sits at the heart of everything we do.

Taking the time to answer every question, no matter how big or small, is essential. It’s not just about providing information; it’s about making sure everyone truly understands, feels confident, and is supported in their learning journey.

We know that people absorb information in different ways, and creating space for questions helps us adapt, clarify, and strengthen that understanding. When learners feel comfortable asking, it builds trust, encourages engagement, and leads to better outcomes for everyone.

Whether it’s revisiting a topic, explaining things from a different angle, or taking that extra moment to check understanding, it all makes a difference.

Please spare a momnet to read feedback from FREC3 update session with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue in Penkridge.

Keep the questions coming - because every one of them counts. 💙

Big shift in cancer care 👇

The NHS is rolling out a faster, injectable version of Keytruda – a widely used immunotherapy that helps the immune system “unmask” and attack cancer. What used to take over an hour via IV drip can now be done in just 1–2 minutes 💉

For patients like Shirley, it’s a game-changer: less time in hospital, more time living life. With around 14,000 patients starting this treatment each year in England, the impact could be huge. It also frees up chemo units and staff time – a big win for a stretched NHS.

Shorter hospital visits results in fewer fatigued, immunocompromised patients in clinical settings. That could reduce infection risk and pressure on emergency pathways.

But here’s the key: more treatment may shift into community settings. Expect increased interactions with cancer patients outside hospitals – meaning emergency responders should stay alert to:
• Immunotherapy side effects (e.g. breathing issues, fatigue, rash)
• Higher vulnerability to illness
• Complex medical histories in “normal” environments

What do you think?

Thousands of patients will be offered a new injectable form of an immunotherapy drug that takes minutes.

🌍 World Asthma Day: Every Breath Counts - Are You Prepared? 💙

As of 2025, statistics reveal an estimated 434 million people could be suffering from asthma worldwide. Approximately 7.2 million of these are believed to live in the UK, impacting around eight in every 100 people.

Asthma attacks can happen anywhere - at work, in public, or at home. For first aiders, recognising the signs early can make all the difference.

Look out for:
• Wheezing or coughing
• Shortness of breath
• Difficulty speaking
• Chest tightness

Quick, calm action is key - helping someone use their inhaler correctly and knowing when to escalate can save lives.

Our First Aid at Work course at Abacus Training covers asthma in detail, including how to recognise symptoms and provide effective treatment in an emergency. It’s practical, confidence-building training that prepares you for real situations.

👉 Be ready. Be confident. Be the difference.

Stop the Spread! Clean Hands, Safer Care 🧼

Clean hands save lives - simple as that. On World Hand Hygiene Day, it’s a great reminder for first aiders that hand hygiene isn’t just routine, it’s protection. Whether you’re dealing with cuts, burns, or CPR, clean hands (or gloves!) reduce infection risk for both you and the casualty. Soap and water is best; hand sanitiser works in a pinch. Make it a habit before and after every intervention. 💙

It's Feedback Friday🔥

This week’s Feedback Friday brings some brilliant insights from our ongoing FREC3 training with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

We’ve received fantastic feedback following an update session at Fire Headquarters, with learners highlighting just how valuable these sessions continue to be in building confidence and reinforcing key skills.

A special mention goes to our trainer, Matt, whose impact clearly stands out. It’s great to hear how well liked he is by learners - not only for his depth of knowledge and real-world experience, but also for his larger-than-life character that keeps sessions engaging and memorable. 💙

Feedback like this really reflects the quality of training being delivered and the positive learning environment being created. A big thank you to everyone involved for their continued enthusiasm and commitment.

Too Young for Cancer? Think Again 🚨

This is a tough but important read. The headline? More young people are developing cancers, especially bowel and breast, and while obesity might explain some of the rise, a big chunk is still a mystery.

For first aiders, this hits home. Why? Because we’re often the ones people open up to first - or the ones spotting when something just isn’t right.

Bradley’s story is the key takeaway: “too young” doesn’t mean “not possible.” Red flag symptoms like unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, blood in stools, or ongoing fatigue should never be brushed off.

👉 As a first aider, you’re not diagnosing - but you are:

✔️Encouraging people to seek medical help sooner
✔️Taking concerns seriously (even if others haven’t)
✔️Noticing changes in regulars, colleagues, or community members

The article also reminds us that lifestyle matters (healthy weight, activity), but it’s not the full picture. So avoid assumptions.

Know the signs. Trust your gut. Speak up early.
It might feel small—but it could change someone’s outcome. 💙

Researchers stress that simple lifestyle changes can still significantly reduce the risk of cancer.
