Taking part in Veganuary? – nutrients to be aware of

According to the Vegan Society, the number of people choosing a vegan diet quadrupled between 2014 and 2019. Over 700,000 signed up for Veganuary, when individuals go vegan for the whole of January, worldwide in 2023. A fully vegan diet does need to be well planned as nutrients such as Vitamin B12, iron, the omega 3 fatty acid DHA and Vitamin D3 are more difficult to obtain from a fully plant-based diet.

Vegan sources of iron, such as green leafy vegetables, contain non haem iron, which is less well absorbed and is found alongside other compounds such as phytates and oxalates, which inhibit iron absorption. Low iron can cause tiredness and poor immune function and iron rich food should be combined with foods rich in vitamin C and eaten away from tea and coffee to further aid iron absorption.

The omega 3 fatty acid DHA is also hard to obtain in a vegan diet and omega 3 often comes in the form of alpha linolenic acid, which is poorly converted to DHA. The recommendation, proposed by EFSA for brain function is 250mg of DHA per day and 12,500- 50,000mg of flax seeds, would need to be consumed to allow for a sufficient level of DHA to be formed.

B12 is not found naturally in plant-based foods and the best sources for a vegan diet would be fortified items such as cereals, yeast extracts and some milk alternatives. Vitamin D is also difficult to obtain from the diet, especially during the winter months and vegan sources are rare and mainly consist of fortified foods. Therefore, it may be sensible for anyone considering veganism to consider supplementation as well as a carefully planned diet. Link to Article

February is fibre month

Not many people are aware that February is fibre month, but this infographic is something that everyone should take a look at. Fibre is under consumed by most people with the average intake in the UK being only a third of the recommended 30g a day.

Fibre is vital for maintaining gut regularity and health, keeps you feeling fuller for longer to support weight loss and normal blood sugar and can be useful for reducing cholesterol and supporting heart health. But it’s not all about ‘roughage’ and bran – fibre is found in a whole range of delicious foods and even cold, cooked carbs such as potatoes and pasta, can provide a form of resistant starch, which acts in much the same way – even when gently reheated. Fibre February has started! Fibre is globally under consumed according to Global Burden of Disease, with intakes standing a bit above 10g per day while recommendations are around 25g per day (depending on country), so every little helps to eat more fibre everyday! A new study is currently underway at Queen Mary University of London, to see if a capsule containing as yet unnamed nutrients can have a similar effect to weight loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy. These medications work by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which increases insulin production, reduces glucose production in the liver, slows down gastric emptying and increases satiety. But there are several nutritional changes which can also increase GLP-1 production in the body.

Several studies have found that non-digestible carbohydrates, monounsaturated fatty acids, omega 3, peptides and amino acids can all be useful. In terms of changes to the diet, this would equate to foods such as oatmeal, eggs, avocados and various nuts. Fermentable fibre is of particular importance as it not only increases GLP-1 secretion but also increases short chain fatty acids (SCFA) production in the gut, which also stimulates GLP-1. Unlike popular slimming jabs, the new invention only contains nutrients, meaning it is potentially free of any side effects, researchers from London said.

Fish Oil associated with decreases in frailty

A newly published study, looking at omega 3 intakes has found a link between this and frailty in adults aged 40-69 years. Frailty is characterised by loss of strength and physical activity and ability and can be associated with falls, broken bones, increased hospital admissions and poor outcomes. With an increasingly ageing population, cases of frailty, along with related health concerns, are on the rise. But several studies, across a wide range of populations globally, has shown that having a higher level of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, in the blood is linked to lower frailty and the ideal figure appears to be 8% as measured by the Omega-3 index. The average in the UK is 5.58% and an intake of 1000mg of EPA and DHA would be needed daily to achieve the optimum level in 4 months. Support for eye health

Age related changes in the eye are often something which concern us as we get older, particularly as some of these conditions, like age related macular degeneration (AMD) are not reversible. But this is something that all adults should be concerned about, as there are strong links between macula damage and blue light, which comes from sunlight, but is also emitted by smart phones, tablets, PCs, laptops, televisions and some indoor lighting. Add the fact that 50% of adults in the UK spend over 11 hours a day looking at these types of devices and that the average intake of a pigment called lutein is just 3mg a day, and eyesight should be a top concern for us all. Lutein, which is found in green, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, can settle in the macula and act like sunglasses – filtering some of the blue light we are exposed to. Higher lutein is associated with a higher level of macula pigment optical density (MPOD), which then reduces the risk of AMD and eye damage. Some of the best-known studies of lutein have used a dose of 10mg a day, but more recent research shows that taking 20mg a day improves MPOD more from the first day of use and it takes 2 years for a 10mg dose to have comparable effects. Hayfever helpers from the diet

Pollen season is already upon us and normally runs from March to August. However ragwort pollen is prolific later in the year, which leads to hayfever symptoms which continue well beyond the normal season. Whatever type of pollen you react to, whether it be grass, tree or w**d pollen, there are dietary changes which may help. Increasing foods which have effects on inflammation, such as ginger, garlic, chilli and turmeric may all be useful. Apples and onions are also often helpful as they provide a compound called quercetin, which is associated with reducing histamine release. It’s allergy season! Although the transition from winter to spring comes with plenty of good things: longer, warmer days, and renewed plant life, this time of year can be a nightmare when hay fever strikes. As pollen is released into the air and finds its way into people’s bodies, seasonal aller...

Sports surprise for post-menopausal women

Most women in their 40s and 50s are familiar with the common menopausal symptoms of hot flushes, mood fluctuations, brain fog and night sweats. But once you enter the post-menopausal stage – which starts one year after your last menstrual period, these symptoms can be joined by one with much longer-term consequences – sarcopenia or loss of muscle mass.

Whilst sarcopenia can affect both genders with age, the loss of oestrogen seen during peri and post-menopausal periods can make the losses more significant. Sarcopenia is also closely linked to bone density as the actions of muscle pulling on bones during exercise can support bone mass. Loss of muscle therefore can also equal loss of bone and the two are so intertwined that there is a specific term for it – osteosarcopenia. But there are things which can be done. Resistance training, such as weight training, squats, lunges, and press-ups, can be particularly useful and studies have shown that adding creatine, a supplement normally recommended for sports nutrition, can increase muscle mass and strength even further. New research has uncovered a link between the use of acid reflux medications including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antacids. A study from the US has shown that these drugs, which include omeprazole, can raise migraine risk by up to 70%. The mechanism is not yet clear but may be linked to the effects on blood vessels in the brain. It is also worth considering the effects these medications have on the absorption of nutrients. Both vitamin B12 and magnesium can be poorly absorbed if stomach acid is low and insufficiencies of both can be linked to headaches. Link to Article

Green tea drink with wide ranging benefits

Numerous studies undertaken in the last few years have reported the health benefits of both green tea and matcha. Whilst both come from the same plant, green tea leaves are normally brewed whilst matcha is made from powdered green tea leaves, meaning that the whole leaf is consumed. A study in 2019 identified that green tea could ease period pain and further studies on teas high in the active compounds, catechins, such as matcha and oolong, have found benefits relating to cognitive function and attention. The results seem to be due to the inhibitory effect that catechins have on inflammatory compounds but may also be related to the theanine content of green tea. This amino acid is often associated with feeling alert yet relaxed. All supplements are available at M.C Sports Therapy . Delivery service is also now available .

The popular drink contains a compound called catechin which may stop the body producing hormones that lead to period pain. But some complain it tastes 'like dirt'.
