Chilblains
Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention
What Are Chilblains?
Chilblains are small, red or purple swelling that appear on the skin, usually on the toes, fingers, ears, or nose, after being exposed to cold weather.
What Causes Chilblains?
Chilblains develop when your skin is exposed to cold and damp conditions, leading to restricted blood flow. Once you move into a warmer environment, the blood vessels expand too quickly, causing irritation and swelling in the affected area. People with poor circulation are more susceptible.
How to Prevent Chilblains
β Dress warmly: keep your legs, feet and body warm.
β Gradually warm up your body after being outside in the cold.
β Keep your feet and hands dry.
β Move regularly to boost circulation
