Single leg kicks. Could this be one of the most underrated exercises in Pilates?
I think it is right up there.

It does not look like much. It is not impressive at first glance. I often see it skipped over, even by Pilates teachers, along with its sister exercise, the Double Leg Kicks.
Yet in this studio, it is part of our regular work, and something I encourage you to include in your home exercises.

The challenge is not the bend of the leg.
It is everything else that is happening.
The glutes (your butt), the hamstrings, the connection through the back of the body, the steady support of the centre and the reach from your back into your arms. When you feel the whole body engaged, the work along the back line becomes deeper, stronger, and more honest.

This is one of those exercises where it is all in how you do it. Not what it looks like. Not what it seems like.

I love to teach this with small, thoughtful cues and different variations that help you really feel the work through the back of the body. It may be an underdog, but there is so much going on beneath the surface.

If you practise Pilates with me, you will know it is never about how it looks. It is about how it feels. That is where true transformation happens. ๐Ÿ’œ

After a lovely week in Denmark, I arrived back in the UK yesterday.
Today is all about catching up on laundry and general life admin, and I will of course be popping in to the studio to check that everything is ready for us to start back tomorrow.

Hopefully you have had a good week as well, and kept your body moving.
I did lots of steps over the last week, but no Pilates at all, and cannot wait to get back on our equipment for a workout today. Nothing puts the body back together like an hour of Pilates ๐Ÿฅฐ

I feel re-charged and so excited to get back in the studio with you! ๐Ÿ’œ

The Cadillac โ€” the big piece of Pilates equipment that quietly makes almost everything possible.

Itโ€™s truly 3D. We can spring the springs from almost any angle, offering the body challenge or support where you need it. Pretty much any exercise from any other piece of equipment in the Pilates studio can be brought onto the Cadillac and made suitable for your body.
And yes, those top bars mean we can hang too โ€” which is always good fun.

The challenge in Pilates does not always look the way you expect. It might be a quiet pause at the most demanding point of an exercise. It might be learning to switch on muscles that have felt absent for years. It might be increasing the pace, adjusting the load, or slowing everything right down.

True progress is not about bigger, harder, or more. It is about working with intention and precision, sometimes in ways that feel unfamiliar.

If we want to feel lighter, stronger, looser, and more confident in our bodies, we have to be willing to work differently. Private sessions allow that space. Individually tailored, thoughtful, and focused on what your body truly needs.๐Ÿ’œ

The Arm Chair, also affectionately known as the Baby Chair.
It might have the smallest springs in the studio, but it will still challenge you in ways you didnโ€™t expect.
The backrest supports your body, so you can focus on strengthening the arms, shoulders and upper body without unnecessary tension around the neck.
We practice the Rowing series for the Reformer on here, and it prepares us for our Long Stretches.
Or we use it as a stand-alone piece of equipment.
There is everything to love about this beautiful little Chair. ๐Ÿ’œ

People often come to Pilates wanting to feel stronger, longer, leaner, and more confident in their body.
And Pilates will make you feel all of those things. With regular practice your physical body will change for sure.
But what you will also discover, is a sense of calm and ease that carries into the rest of your life. These changes reach far beyond the session โ€” into your day, your posture, the way you carry yourself, and how you feel in your own skin.
That combination is what makes this work so powerful.

There is something about a private Pilates session โ€” the time, the space, the personalised workout, the commitment to yourself โ€” that allows these changes to really take root, both in your body and beyond.
Seeing this in my clients is what makes me love coming into the studio every day. ๐Ÿ’œ

On the Cadillac, we are directly connected to the springs.
We can really โ€˜communicateโ€™ with them, they tell us a lot about our control, stability and level of force.
Suspending ourselves into the springs, but not over suspending.
Managing the range of our arm movements to maintain the control.
Reaching through the legs, maintaining a good alignment and working the arms from the back.

The springs will soon tell us if something is off, because they will either pull you back over your feet or you will โ€˜fallโ€™ forward.

This series is lot of work, and also a lot of fun.
The last exercise is my personal favourite, the most delicious side stretch. ๐Ÿ’œ

One of my clients asked me yesterday, โ€œAm I your weirdest client?โ€
And honestlyโ€ฆ weird doesnโ€™t even come into it. You are just you, and that is why I love teaching you.

Every person and every body that walks into the studio is different.
Different history, different habits, different ways of moving and feeling. Thatโ€™s not something to fixโ€”itโ€™s something I love.

This Martha Graham quote is one I have shared before because it reminds me (and hopefully you) that there isnโ€™t one โ€œrightโ€ way to be, or move, or do Pilates.
Your Pilates practice is yours. It doesnโ€™t have to look a certain way or match any particular aesthetic.

Itโ€™s about listening in, noticing what is happening in your body, and doing the best you can on that day. Thatโ€™s it.

So keep being you. Keep showing up as you are.
Because that is why I love teaching each and everyone of you. ๐Ÿ’œ

People often think progress in Pilates shows up first in advanced exercises. What I see as a teacher with 30 years experience is something different.
The big shifts often appear in the basics. Footwork and tendon stretch reveal how your body is organised, and whether the movement is connected to your centre rather than forced.
And I observe you and take note of what I see, because these exercises reveal a lot about what else we need to work on. These fundamental exercises are not warm ups to rush through. They are the building blocks that support and progress your Pilates practice.
