Update on the maternity services in Stroud/Gloucester

We’re really keen to ensure we represent all those who use maternity services in the county, and to do that we need a wide range of people to join us!

Update to add: I think this post may be a bit vague when it says "newly born baby". Let's be more specific in saying healthy, full-term babies, with healthy mother, should be kept skin to skin, the infant having no hat on, for at least the first hour after birth (and hopefully beyond). This improves breastfeeding outcomes and is optimal for thermoregulation of the newborn.

NHS Gloucestershire is keen to hear your experience of any support you received with your mental health and wellbeing during pregnancy and the first year after giving birth.

We would really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete this survey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/PerinatalInfantMH/

Posted • 💙 This week is and whilst I fully support this week of raising awareness of the issues faced by grieving parents when their baby dies, I am also conscious that many people will find the coverage re-triggering in a way that is upsetting, anxiety inducing and difficult to cope with.

💜 If you do find yourself re-experiencing difficult or overwhelming feelings about the loss of your pregnancy or baby please do share your feelings with a trusted friend or professional. Talking about how you feel can help process and express feelings that are very natural given what you have experienced.

💙 Be kind to yourself this week and think of extra activities that can help you to feel grounded, calmer and more relaxed. Hot baths, walks in nature, time spent with loved ones who understand, time off work, watching feel good films, and enjoying good nourishing food are just a few suggestions.

💜 Journalling on your feelings can also help to recognise, understand, label, and express them. Please don't disregard your feelings or struggle through them, they need to be honoured and if you don't feel comfortable sharing with a trusted friend or professional, journalling can be a great way of processing strong feelings that otherwise can feel overwhelming.

💙 Ask for time, space and understanding from those who can give it whilst your are feeling re-triggered. This might mean asking for some compassionate time off from your employer, or time and space away from home. Ask for what you need whilst you are feeling triggered. A break from regular responsibilities can provide space and perspective on the feelings that you are experiencing.
