⏱ Time matters with crush injuries

Crush injuries don’t just happen on construction sites or in road traffic collisions — they can also happen at home, especially if heavy furniture isn’t secured properly.

If someone has been crushed for LESS than 15 minutes:
âś… If safe, release them as soon as possible
- Check for normal breathing (start CPR if needed)
- Call 999
- Monitor their breathing and response
- Check for other injuries

If someone has been crushed for MORE than 15 minutes:
❌ Do not remove the object
- Call 999 immediately
- Monitor breathing and response
- Offer reassurance until help arrives

Knowing the difference can save a life — first aid training gives you the confidence to act correctly when it really counts.

Resist the urge! - You might want to take the object out, but that can make the bleeding worse.

Your first step would be A&E so a professional can take the object out and are at hand if the bleeding gets worse.

If the casualty is losing blood, place a rolled up dressing either side and apply pressure carefully, making sure not to put pressure on the object.

If the bandages are higher than the embedded object, you can bandage over them. If not, just hold in place.

❗️Don't tip your head back!

With a nose bleed, people will often tip their head back automatically in an attempt to stop the blood flowing, however this can result in swallowing the blood (and then lead to vomiting) so leaning forward is the best position.

To treat a nosebleed:

🔹Sit the casualty (or yourself) down and lean them forwards
🔹Ask them to pinch the soft part of the nose just above the nostrils and breath through the mouth
🔹 Apply this pressure for 10 minutes and then start to release slowly
🔹 Ask them to avoid rubbing or blowing their nose
🔹 If the bleeding continues, repeat the pinching process for a further 10 minutes
🔹 If the bleeding continues beyond 30 minutes then you will need to seek medical advice.

Nosebleeds are usually nothing to worry about, some people are more prone than others. However, there are some occasions when we should go to A&E:

🔹The nosebleed lasts longer than 30 minutes
🔹 The bleeding seems excessive
🔹 The casualty/you are swallowing a large amount of blood causing vomiting
🔹 The bleeding started after a blow to the head
🔹 The casualty/you are feeling weak or dizzy
🔹 The casualty/you are having difficulty breathing

Hopefully this is helpful info, feel free to share with anyone who may find this useful!

First aid is essential because accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time—no matter the workplace.

🚨Here’s why it matters for your business:
- It saves lives – Quick, confident first aid can prevent a situation from becoming serious or fatal.
- It’s a legal requirement – UK law requires employers to provide adequate first aid provision for their staff.
- It protects your team – Trained staff can respond immediately while waiting for emergency services.
- It reduces downtime – Prompt treatment can limit injury severity and speed up recovery.
- It builds confidence and morale – Employees feel safer knowing help is available.
- It shows duty of care – Demonstrates that you value staff wellbeing and take health and safety seriously.
- Having trained first aiders isn’t just a box-ticking exercise—it’s a practical, responsible step that supports a safer, more resilient workplace.

... I should have attended a first aid course

🔪It started with a cut finger while chopping veg.
“No problem,” I thought… until it wouldn’t stop bleeding.
Then someone grabbed a tray straight from the oven.
🔥Now we’ve got a burn happening in the kitchen too.
Just as we’re dealing with that, someone walks in with a nosebleed — apparently the festive excitement was a bit much.

Three injuries. One kitchen.
A lot of Googling.
And a sudden realisation that knowing what to do would have helped massively.

The festive season is busy, chaotic and full of moments you don’t plan for.
A little first aid knowledge can turn panic into calm.

As we head into a new year, ask yourself one simple question:
Would I know what to do in an emergency?

First aid training isn’t just a qualification — it’s a responsibility.
Don't be a bystander - be a lifesaver.
