Cold laser therapy, also called low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate healing in tissues without producing heat. It is commonly used in horses for muscle soreness, tendon and ligament injuries, arthritis, back pain, wounds, bruising and general rehabilitation.
The light energy is thought to increase cellular energy production (ATP), improve circulation, reduce inflammation and encourage tissue repair. Many practitioners also find it helpful for releasing tight fascia and muscles, especially around the back, shoulders, pelvis and poll area.
Common areas treated in horses include:
Tendons and ligaments
Sacroiliac and pelvic regions
Shoulders and back muscles
Arthritic joints
Poll and neck tension
Wounds and post-surgical healing
Hoof abscesses and bruising
Trigger points and acupressure points
Many horses relax during treatment, often lowering their head, softening through the eye or even becoming sleepy. Lancing Equestrian
