🥗 Chicken and grapefruit salad bowl.

🌞 With spring here, and it’s sunny outside, this colourful salad bowl is just the job for a light lunch.

I started with a handful of baby spinach leaves, and added some cucumber, and some sweet red and yellow peppers. Then topped with cooked chicken and bite-sized pieces of half a pink grapefruit.

To complete it, I drizzled some extra virgin olive oil for some healthy fat, and a few twists of freshly ground black pepper.

😋 Bursting with flavour!

There are some food groups like protein and fibre that are essential to losing weight after forty; they keep you fuelled and full. But my single best advice is to mostly eat whole foods.

There is no faster way to drop weight than to uplevel your diet. The sooner you start eating whole, unprocessed foods, the sooner you’ll start to feel lighter.

Protein-rich foods like chicken, fish, meat and eggs plus and loads of fresh vegetables should be the base of your diet.

Vegetarians should focus on protein from sources like organic tofu, beans and pulses, seeds and nuts.

Carbohydrates like quinoa, oatmeal, butternut squash, garden peas, and whole grains plus fresh fruit make up your second tier of healthy eating.

And natural fats like avocado and coconut, olives, olive oil (plus nuts and seeds) round out your diet.

These foods, prepared simply at home with fresh herbs and spices, are some of the keys to sustainable weight loss at any age.

What one new food can you add to your diet this week?

When you think about your ideal weight, are you thinking of a number?

Measures, charts, tables, graphs.

But numbers are just … numbers.

And numbers can be useful. Sometimes. We don’t have to throw the numbers away.

But there’s more to feeling good than seeing a number.

What’s the ‘feeling’ of your happy healthy weight?

That’s your ideal weight.
🥰

Have you tried to improve health or lose weight before and found it hard to stay on track?
or
Have you pushed through, reached your goal and then struggled to stay there?

If so, this could help.

It can feel hard, and it can be frustrating if we focus mainly on the food aspect. Maybe a diet book or a meal plan will be the answer. Sometimes it is, but other times not.

Yes, food is important. But improving health and wellbeing can be a lot easier when you focus on the big picture.

At Inspiring Nutrition we work with three pillars of wellbeing:

🔵 Healthy eating, including what, when and how we eat.

🔵 Healthy living, including all of our lifestyle habits that are not food.

🔵 Healthy thinking, including how we set goals, our values, beliefs and thoughts about our journey.

Each pillar is important, but on their own may not be sufficient.

For most of us, myself included, we need all three to be in place for the best chance to achieve results that last.

When we work towards health and weight loss goals from this perspective it can be so much easier and more rewarding.

Are you covering all three pillars?

🍂 It’s November!

🍂 So grateful for the beauty of the autumn.

I took this photo during my walk. It’s so nice to be out in nature, feeling gratitude and appreciation for the moment and the seasons.

A little bit of self-care if you like. 💕

Do you get frustrated sometimes when things don’t turn out the way you hope?

And feel like you’ve wasted time?

This can happen when we’ve tried a diet and, even though we’ve followed it as best we can, it still hasn’t given us the results that we want.

🔎 What if that time wasn’t wasted?
🔎 What if there could be valuable lessons in the experience?

Maybe that approach wasn’t right for you.
Maybe you didn’t enjoy the foods.
Maybe it didn’t fit with your lifestyle.
Maybe there was something else missing.

🔥Whatever it was, there is gold in trying to learn something positive and helpful from the experience.
🔥Then we can adapt and move forward again.
🔥Then it’s never a waste of time.

Do you agree that time spent learning what doesn't work is never a waste of time?

Do you want to save time in the kitchen?

Have you tried ‘cook once to eat twice’?

This means creating a meal using double quantities of ingredients, so that you make twice as much as you need. Then you have an extra, ready-prepared meal for another day, for very little extra time.

🍲 It works whether you’re cooking for one, or more than one.

🍲 Ideal way to eat delicious home-cooked meals in a convenient way, when you’re busy.

🍲 This can save you time and effort for cooking and can reduce the amount of washing up.

🍲 You can store these extra portions in the fridge or you can freeze them. Then, the next day, or later in the week, you can have a quick meal that you know is nutritious.
Ensure that you reheat chilled food thoroughly before eating.

🍲 Lots of meals can be prepared like this, including soups, stews, casseroles, chilli etc.

What’s your favourite meal to ‘cook once to eat twice’?

It’s natural for us to want progress to be smooth and steady towards our happy and healthy weight.

We put in the work and it seems reasonable to want to see results for our efforts.

The reality is that progress may not be smooth. For lots of reasons.

The important thing is to keep going.

When we know ahead of time that there will be bumps in the road, we can be prepared for them.

When we are prepared, it is much easier to keep going.

Do you want to lose weight … but without giving up {insert your favourite food}?

😕 It’s no fun if your weight loss way of eating excludes the foods that you enjoy.

You may be able to manage for a few days on willpower alone, but then life happens, and then your plan stops happening.

😋 It's possible to include foods you love eating and still lose weight. 😊

When you are trying to lose weight, I know the tendency is only to celebrate the scale moving down, or even the scale staying the same. But the truth is, the things on this list are important to acknowledge too.

And, even better, you can pick more than one from the list.

Which ones are you celebrating today? 🥳
