I love mainstream awareness of nervous system regulation as it brings so much needed knowledge to people. A downside is that the over simplification can miss crucial detail which this reel highlights that in our desire for soothing we can often miss a step.

This was the first time I ever heard on screen the reality of so many people’s experience. Freeze response is so common with people, woman particularly and it’s instinctual but that doesn’t stop the shame of compliance.

It’s so important to recognise when we’re in a place that calms us. When looking for a therapist this is the reason we look to the body for signs we’ve found the right one.

Splitting - yes a technical term but the real time experience of this swing between perspectives can result in feeling disorientated, without direction and wrong (at least half the time!), but the relief of shifting from one way of being to the another, can feel like a relief and so this temporary ease means the cycle gains momentum and continues.

Psychotherapy can provide a relationship in which to be seen and accepted as a cohesive ‘whole’. And also to deal with the discomfort of holding these two counter ways of seeing and being in the world.

When your nervous system doesn’t feel safe, it can swing between extremes. One moment, “My partner is horrible!” The next, “It’s all my fault; I should be grateful.” This is called splitting, a trauma response rooted in insecure attachment. It’s your body’s way of trying to protect you from pain and uncertainty.

When your nervous system feels safe, something new becomes possible: emotional integration. You can feel anger without losing sight of love. You can see your partner’s strengths and hold them accountable for their impact. You can honor your pain while staying connected.

When Most People Start Therapy:

When they are in crisis & at a breaking point.

When We Should Start Therapy:

Before we reach crisis.
When we want to learn more about ourselves.
When we feel interested.
When we want to start having better relationships.

Love this idea of gentle tough talk!

It can be challenging to start making decisions that feel more aligned with who you are. However, in time, as you begin to make these decisions, the discomfort and fear start to be replaced by a sense of confidence and freedom.

So often we confuse the concept of personal accountability that we forget that we have some influence in relationships when people don’t treat us the way we want to be treated. We can’t change other people but what is in out gift is how far we accept how the other behaves with us. To put it bluntly, we get what we tolerate. That’s not to say we can’t influence an existing relationship - we don’t have to write people off, but our work is knowing what we want from people, and sometimes to not share in places it’s not wanted.
