As the colder months approach, Lion Health Surgery is proud to announce the official start of its annual Flu and COVID vaccination programme, designed to “winter proof” the most vulnerable members of the community.

After just four days of the national programme, Lion Health pulled out all the stops to vaccinate an impressive 2650 patients. Extra vaccination sessions will continue throughout the coming weeks to ensure as many eligible patients as possible receive their protection ahead of winter.

Lion Health Surgery would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all patients who turned up for their vaccinations. Attendance was high (Did Not Attend rate only 3%), reflecting the community’s commitment to staying healthy, and the team greatly appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding as the surgery managed large numbers of patients efficiently and safely.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication and teamwork of the entire Lion Health staff, working tirelessly to deliver a smooth, efficient, and welcoming service. “It’s a real team effort,” says Dr. Simon Carvell, GP Partner at Lion Health. “From our reception staff and nurses to our administrative team and volunteers, everyone is committed to keeping our patients safe and well this winter.”

Who is eligible for the flu vaccine?
• Adults aged 65 and over (64 yr olds if they turn 65 by 31st March 2026)
• Pregnant women
• People with certain long-term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems
• Residents in long-term care facilities
• Carers and frontline health and social care workers

Who is eligible for the COVID vaccine booster?
• Adults aged 75 and over (74yr olds if they turn 75 before 31st Jan 2026)
• Patients who are immunosuppressed

If patients believe they are eligible but have not yet booked an appointment, Lion Health encourages them to do so as soon as possible. Appointments can be made conveniently via the online form on the Practice website, at the front desk at the surgery or by calling on 01384 460111.

Stay protected this winter — book your flu and COVID vaccinations!

Important Changes to Accessing GP Services from 1st October

As many of you know, we introduced an online triage system earlier this year. To understand your experience, we recently conducted a patient survey, with 708 patients responding. We are really grateful for the feedback and we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of the results and subsequent changes to our system.

Here’s what we learned:

• Around 75% of our patients are now using the online request form.
• Of those, 70% told us they would use the form again.
• Many patients told us the form feels lengthy and repetitive at times, but the majority reported that it has improved their access to care.
• Over half were satisfied or very satisfied with the outcome of their request.
• Patients who are still using the phones are experiencing longer waits at peak times due to the length of time taken to complete the triage form.
• 29% of patients who had called the surgery would consider using the online form in the future -their main challenge was that the form wasn't available to use.

For those unable to use the internet, our phone lines remain open. However, with our move towards a full triage approach (rather than “first come, first served”), our Patient Service Team needs to gather more information from you during calls. This has meant that although the number of calls we receive has reduced, the length of calls has increased. As a result, waiting times during busy periods have not reduced as much as we would like. As we review our processes and more patients become aware of the forms, we anticipate that these wait times will reduce.

So, what is changing from 1st October?

• Forms will be open from 8am - 6.30pm. Please only submit one medical request form per health issue, and only one per day.
• Please continue to put as much information about your health concerns on the form to enable your form to be triaged appropriately. Please also state your availability for an appointment -this will help our booking team. Where possible we will try to work around your other commitments, although this may not always be possible.
• We will aim to triage all requests on the same day and get back to you with next steps - please be available to take a call or respond to a text message.
• Some patients may be offered appointments 2–3 weeks ahead, depending on the urgency and type of need. If this is the case, you will be informed and contacted within a week to book an appointment (this may be via text, call or using a self-book link).
• The information collected in the form allows our GP-led triage team to make sure you get the right care, with the right person, at the right time. This may not always be a GP, but another skilled member of our team.

We kindly ask that patients respect the clinical triage decisions made. We fully understand that sometimes you may need reassurance, and if your condition worsens, or if you disagree with the outcome, please let us know so that we can review your request.

We are also looking at ways to streamline the online form to make it simpler and less repetitive in response to patient feedback. More updates on this will follow.

We are proud of the progress we have made so far, and want to reassure you that we are continuing to work hard behind the scenes to improve how you access care. Thank you for your patience and support as we move into this next phase.

The Lion Health Team.

We are currently experiencing some technical issues with our phone lines, limiting outgoing calls from Lion Health.

This is a nationwide issue and currently out of our control, however we are seeking regular updates from our phone provider in order to resume normal service as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your patience.

Good afternoon,

We have been working hard behind the scenes to implement some changes to our phone system as part of improving our overall patient experience when calling the practice.

From Monday 21st July, you may notice that the options when calling the practice will be slightly different.

When calling the practice please listen to all of the options carefully before making your selection. This is because we want to ensure that you are put through to the correct department to take your call and so that our staff can deal with your enquiries efficiently.

Watch this space next week for some more information on how else we've improved our accessibility for those of you calling in to the surgery.

Remember, our online system Anima is there for you who do have access to the internet. Please keep our phone lines free for those who have no choice but to call the surgery.

Thank you

Good afternoon,

We read with interest Professor Leng's review published today and its recommendations around Physicians Associates in primary care.

We look forward to any mandatory updates and plans from government level following this review to support the process of any changes.

Lion Health is committed to the advancement, inclusion and growth of our allied health member team in line with Government and NHS trajectories for the clinical workforce.

All of our staff have excellent support, supervision and oversight in place whenever it is required- and the inclusion of our fantastic PAs over the last couple of years has meant evolution and development of our multidisciplinary team, and supported thousands of patients to access the treatment they needed in a more timely way.
