Did you know reading can be a great way to connect with a loved one living with dementia?

Here are some of our tips to make reading enjoyable:

📖 Choose the Right Material: Try to opt for short stories, poetry, or picture books with vibrant images.

🗣️Read Aloud & Slowly:Use a calm and clear voice to help them absorb the content.

🤔Encourage Interaction: Try asking simple questions about the pictures or storylines to promote engagement.

💜Use Familiar Themes: choose books that resonate with their past experiences or interests.

🤲🏻 Incorporate Sensory Experiences: Use books with different textures or related objects for a tactile element.

😌Limit Distractions: Find a quiet, comfortable space to create a focused reading environment.

🙏🏻 Be Patient and Flexible: Pay attention to their mood and adjust the reading sessions accordingly.

🌿 Supporting wellbeing in the workplace 🌿

This week, Lisa, our Workforce Coordinator, continued her own ongoing learning by taking part in Worcestershire County Council's Work Well Insights training, focusing on workplace mental health support.

The session was really insightful and included discussions around Orange Button training and how Work Well NHS Hereford and Worcestershire can support people at different stages of their mental health journey.

One of the biggest takeaways for us was just how important it is to keep conversations open and to create a workplace culture where people feel safe, supported, and able to speak up.

We’re proud to already offer our team Monthly Wellbeing Calls, where we make time to check in with our staff, giving them the opportunity to talk openly about anything they may be facing — whether work related or personal.

We’ve seen first hand how positive this approach can be, helping to address small concerns early and prevent them from becoming bigger issues.

Because when our team feels supported, they can continue to do what they do best, supporting others 💜

💨🌧 Keeping Things Moving During Storm Goretti – We’re Here for You 🌧💨

With snow and bad weather sweeping across us here in the Wyre Forest, we know this weather can be unsettling, especially for older people and those living alone. At Riverside we’re out and about, keeping things moving and making sure our clients are safe, warm and supported through the worst of it.

A little kindness goes a long way during storms like this, so here are a few simple ways you can check in on an elderly neighbour or vulnerable person nearby:

✨ Pop round or give them a quick call to make sure they're ok
✨ Check they have heating, food, hot drinks and essentials
✨ Offer to pick up shopping, medication or post
✨ Help bring bins in or secure outdoor items
✨ Make sure they have working torches, batteries and blankets
✨ Check their mobile or landline is charged and working
✨ Clear or grit their path if it's slippery
✨ Share your contact number in case they need something urgently
✨ Invite them for a warm drink or a chat if they seem anxious

It only takes a moment, but it can make an enormous difference.
