Lifestyle medicine is branch of evidence-based medicine in which comprehensive lifestyle changes (including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, social support and environmental exposures) are used to prevent, treat and reverse the progression of chronic diseases by addressing their underlying causes.

An easier explanation is one which my patients understand.

Rather than continuing to mop up the overflow from a bathtub, lifestyle medicine is about trying to turn the leaking tap off.

So we have started the lifestyle change support group with 4 lovely people, who have all connected really well and got to know each other a little bit.

I have lots of excitement and plans for the group going forward and feel that for anyone joining, there can be huge benefits to having both that peer support and being coached through change, as well as learning correct information rather than some of the less accurate things that we see banded around social media - which is not necessarily what the professionals are actually saying and advising!

For a fantastic source of information on numerous topics relating to health and wellbeing, I'd thoroughly recommend Dr Rangan Chatterjee's website.

His PODCASTS include guests from a range of (medical and non medical) backgrounds, that are highly knowledgeable in their field, and present sound, up to date evidence based information, along with lots of self help tips and advice that you can put into practice straight away!

Every patient is unique. I advocate for personalised medicine specific to the individual. However, I believe lifestyle and nutrition are always the bedrock upon which all chronic medical management should be founded.

Would you like to join our small face to face group which focuses on many areas of lifestyle to support you with changes to help your health and well being?

It will be a relaxed space for learning handy tips, getting up to date evidence based information, sharing ideas and experiences and goal setting where appropriate.

If you know you need to make changes either for your general health, because you want to future proof your later life, or you simply want to just feel better (and you're fed up with feeling rubbish), you don’t have to do it alone and support is here!

This is not a class or a course, but an interactive group with me guiding you, providing information, as well as adding to the encouragement that we will all be giving each other.

We start on Tuesday 6th February.
Cedars Park Community Centre
6.30-8pm, Tuesdays
Β£15 per session. You can attend every week or just now and again to suit you.

There will weekly updates on a private WhatsApp group announcing which topic areas we will be looking at so you will know if that session is one you need/want to attend.

To book a space (2-3 remaining), call me (Louise) on 07789935190 or 01449 678250

Yes, genetics play a role in the development of chronic disease, but lifestyle factors have a far, far, greater impact on chronic disease, our susceptibility to them, and their progression.

Focusing on social genomics and epigenetic, the paper I have attached below, quite profoundly demonstrates just how much socio-environmental and psychological experiences actually affect our gene expression, and then ultimately our immunity and levels of inflammation.
As lifestyle medicine practitioners/health coaches/medical practitioners we know what massive implications there are here.

This article was part of some recent mandatory CPD with the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine - really quite fascinating!

Lifestyle Medicine is an interdisciplinary journal focusing on the clinical and scientific aspects of lifestyle medicine and its incorporation into clinical practice.
