I used to be skinny and weak

I wanted nothing more than to be hench, have a big chest, big biceps, and attract lots of girls

Way back when, I was a competitive swimmer

I'd train 4 times a week for several hours a week and almost certainly didn't eat enough food.

Hence, my somewhat lean but skinny appearance

After I quit swimming, I started lifting weights

I wanted the typical bodybuilder look, thick and large muscles which were ripped as f

But knew nothing about what to eat or how much

And I stayed skinny for years

Until I learnt how to put my cooking skills to use

I also learnt how to calculate the macros I needed and grew as a result

How To Heal Your Gut

I have been diagnosed with IBS for over 15 years, and I'm sorry to tell you, you can't just heal it like that

Don't believe that bs

Although I have to deal with it daily, it doesn't usually present too many problems, but that’s because I know how to manage it

But flare-ups can be horrendous

Being stressed can make my IBS worse, as well as foods containing FODMAPS

FODMAPS are foods that contain carbohydrates which ferment in the gut and include wheat in bread (but not gluten), and many fruits and vegetables

This can then cause bloating, cramps, and other undesirable effects while the sugars are fermenting

People often blame gluten for FODMAP issues, but it's actually the sugars in these foods that are fermenting in the colon (large intestine)

Gluten can still cause serious problems for some, but that is a different thing entirely

Coffee and alcohol are also irritants that are known to cause gut issues

I have learnt to try and avoid my known triggers or at least limit them to reduce the severity of symptoms

It can 100% make my life difficult and has stopped me from doing many things, and keeps me locked in the house until the symptoms go away

Which, for someone who loves getting out and exploring, is not a lot of fun

I have spent years studying nutrition and am qualified to help with these kinds of issues

You're shovelling food in non-stop, you put away 3000 calories per day, but the scale isn't moving and you feel de-motivated

You tell everyone, 'I eat loads!' But are you really eating enough to build muscle?

Often, skinny guys overestimate their calorie intake

Testosterone Doesn't Build Muscle

When guys are trying to gain muscle they think they eat a lot and train hard

In fact, they probably aren’t quite doing what they think they are

One of these things is not reaching muscular failure

This is the most important thing to get right if you are trying to gain muscle

Things like testosterone have very little impact (if any) on muscle gains

In non PED users, our natural levels of T are unlikely to be high enough to stimulate muscle gains on their own

Other factors such as IGF1, “ The Pump”, squats, Growth Hormone don’t increase or cause muscle gains either

So what’s left?

How hard we train 𝘢𝘬𝘢 intensity and specifically whether you train to failure or not

This is solely what stimulates the pathway to build new proteins

This occurs from sufficient tension on the muscle cell walls

The cell walls have sensors which can detect tension from training

If this is high enough they send a signal down the pathway

Which results in proteins being made and then added to existing muscle fibres increasing their size

Most people don’t train hard enough so never get bigger

Caffeine is bad for muscle gains

Most people who want to build muscle think using pre-workouts containing caffeine will give them the energy they need for their gym session

But because they don’t eat enough to start with they rely on caffeine for energy instead....

Caffeine can do more harm than good

Here’ the rub....

Caffeine make us less hungry which directly impacts how much we eat

If you don’t eat enough you won’t gain weight or muscle or have the energy to train

The hunger hormone Ghrelin is released when hungry to make us eat and falls after eating when full

Caffeine can also increase your metabolism burning more calories which, if you were already in a deficit can push you further into it

These factors can make it very difficult to eat enough calories to put yourself into a surplus in order to gain weight as you simply do not feel hungry

Another area of research suggests that caffeine can alter gut bacteria and the microbiome resulting in less nutrients being absorbed

Further reducing caloric intake and making weight gain even harder

Your body adapts to challenges by making it easier next time

In order to keep seeing gains you need to keep the challenge going

If you do the same weight and or reps there will eventually be no challenge
