Congratulations to Councillor Mike Rice of Henley-in-Arden on his appointment as Chair of Stratford-on-Avon District Council for the year ahead. We’d also like to extend our sincere thanks to outgoing Chair and Trustee, Councillor Kate Rolfe, for her commitment and service to the district over the past year.

It’s a real privilege for us to have been chosen as one of Cllr Rice’s nominated charities, alongside VASA. We’re excited for the year ahead and all that it will bring. Wishing Mike every success in his new role and we're looking forward to working together.

Today Stratford-on-Avon District Council held its Annual Council Meeting where Councillor Kate Rolfe handed over the chain of office to Councillor Mike Rice.

During her term of office (May 2025 - May 2026) Councillor Kate Rolfe (Stratford Tiddington) supported Stratford's Eco Workshop CIC, a community interest company who provide purposeful work activities for adults with learning disability and autism and raised over £7,000 - final figure to be confirmed.

This time, Cllr Mike Rice (Henley-in-Arden) has chosen The Shakespeare Hospice and VASA as his charities during his term of office.

Happy International Nurses Day 💜

Today, we pause to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary nurses who bring comfort, dignity and compassion into some of life’s most challenging moments. Your care goes far beyond clinical skill; it’s in the reassuring smile, the gentle words, the quiet strength you offer patients and families when they need it most. You are there in moments of fear, hope, sadness and healing, and your presence makes all the difference.

At The Shakespeare Hospice and across our community, we see every day the incredible impact you have. You are not only caregivers, but advocates, listeners and lifelines - and we are endlessly grateful for everything you do.

Thank you for your dedication, your kindness and your unwavering commitment to caring for others. You truly are the heart of care.

Our hospice gardens are a place of peace, reflection and quiet joy.
For patients, families and staff, they offer a moment to breathe, connect and simply be.
These beautiful spaces don’t just happen - they are lovingly cared for by our incredible volunteers. 💜
From planting and pruning to keeping everything looking its best, their dedication makes such a difference every single day. We are so grateful for the time, care and kindness they give to help make our hospice feel like home.

Henry puts it simply:
“The outside is fine… it’s the inside.”
Living with a serious illness isn’t always visible.
What people see isn’t the full story.

At The Shakespeare Hospice, we support people like Henry to live well—with the right care, at the right time.

Hospice Care: More Than Just the End
Meet Henry, a remarkable 90-year-old who has been part of The Shakespeare Hospice family for three years. Diagnosed with bowel cancer, Henry faced two monumental challenges: his illness and the loss of his beloved wife, Barbara, in May 2022.

With his characteristic dry wit, Henry says, “The outside is fine; it’s the inside.” Since his diagnosis, he has embraced the support offered at our Day Hospice, attending weekly exercise sessions and monthly lunches, all while driving himself here and making his own arrangements.

Henry’s story challenges the myth that hospice care is only for the end of life. He joined us at the point of diagnosis, and the physical, social, and practical support he receives has made a significant difference in his life.

“It’s meeting people in the group who haven’t necessarily got the same problem, but certainly a similar one. Both mentally and physically, it makes a difference,” he shares.

The human connections formed remind us that we are never alone in our journeys. At The Shakespeare Hospice, we provide vital support to our community every day.

Join us in celebrating Henry and the many others who find strength and companionship in our care. 💜Read more about Henry on our website.
