📨 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐝?

Once your GP has made a referral, it goes straight to the hospital or specialist service. From there:

Your referral will be triaged by the hospital team. This means they review the information to decide how urgent your case is and which clinic is most appropriate.

After triage, the hospital will contact you directly with details about your appointment. This may be by letter, text message, phone call, or through the NHS App (depending on the service).

GP surgeries do not manage hospital appointment schedules, so we are unable to speed up or change appointment dates. If you’re waiting to hear, please keep an eye on your post, phone and NHS App.

We know waiting for hospital appointments, scans, or specialist referrals can be frustrating, and many patients understandably want to know how long it will take.

Hospital waiting times are set and managed by the hospital services, not by GP surgeries. This means we cannot control or speed up how quickly you are seen once a referral has been made.

Referrals to specialists are made by a GP or clinician following an assessment of your symptoms or condition.

In most cases, you will need to have an appointment first so we can ensure you are referred to the most appropriate service and that a referral is necessary.

Some services also accept self-referrals, meaning you can contact them directly without seeing a GP. Our team can advise you if this is an option for you.
