If an initial injury rehab process has not been thorough then pain in the area can become an ongoing issue. This is a common occurrence with poorly monitored and managed ‘copy and paste’ rehab approaches.

I spend a lot of my time helping people who have previously received substandard care.

Zulu Zawn - Gower 02.03.2025

Lots of us like to push ourselves outdoors. If you are an outdoor athlete, your rehab should always consider your training and performance schedule.

Wherever possible your rehab should involve using the sport to rehab the injury by integrating a graded training/performance approach. Good rehab considers the person, their life & their motivators.

Rehab is not just…’do these 3 exercises every day they will ‘fix’ you’.

There is zero nuance to that kind of ‘copy & paste’ approach and it often fails people. Leading them to seek further guidance (at additional financial cost).

When looking for a rehab provider seek out someone who understands the nuance. Someone who looks to understand you as a person and an athlete.

Alongside individual specific rehab programming, exercise coaching and tutorial videos. I support my clients through the rehab process for the entirety with remote monitoring at no extra cost.

I am always available for guidance, advice and reassurance.

This significantly increases the chance of a successful intervention.

As a Strength Trainer I understand the concept of load management. As a Rehab Professional I understand that prescribing more exercises for already overloaded tissue often not the best approach. Sometimes advice, reassurance and graduated return is the best way to get people back to what they love.

I provide relevant education regarding the client’s injury, followed by a rehab approach which includes ongoing advice, support and remote monitoring. A full package delivered by someone who understands the psychology of being injured and not just the injury.

I’m currently rehabbing online after a pretty significant grade 2 ankle sprain.

Dedicated recreational athletes (climbers, runners, cyclist, grapplers…) are always going to want to get back to sport quickly and start training and performing.

If you take the ‘don’t do that approach’ a large percentage of committed athletes will ignore that advice anyway. Sometimes it’s better to advise candidly and provide parameters for them to work with as they rehab and perform in tandem.

Plyometrics, acceleration & deceleration training should always be factored into the lower limb injury rehabilitation process.

Have you rehabbed an ankle sprain, an achillies or patellar tendinopathy, an MCL/LCL/ACL sprain, calf strain, hamstring strain ?

Did you use plyometrics as part of the process? If not then maybe you didn’t receive the best guidance.

Effective rehab and effective training for sports performance often go hand in hand.

Being able to combine both elements into an approach requires knowledge and understanding of the injury/pain, the person’s multi layered goals and the demands of the sport being trained for. This must be framed into a timeline that is both realistic and achievable.

For me effective rehab is often at the intersection between focused conditioning with rehab and focused training for a sport. A rehab practicioner should provide the client with individualised programming and also the relevant knowledge so they understand each element of the process within the big picture.

No amount of scrapping, cupping, sticking needles into someone, massaging for ‘postural correction’ or supposed ‘structural changes’ is going to be effective for what I have written above.

I’m sick of seeing what is being sold to people on Instagram as ‘rehab’ and feel it’s time to start talking about the nonsense that’s being sold to people under the guise of ‘rehabilitation’.

Follow up from yesterday’s post.

This single leg exercise progression can be part of a management approach for:

Knee pain
Hip pain
Patella/Quad tendon tendinopathy
PFPS
GTPS
Osteoarthritis
ACL/MCL/LCL rehab
Ankle sprain rehab
FAI
Hip dysplasia
Deep gluteal pain syndrome
Sport specific conditioning (running, cycling, climbing)
This list could continue.

The point is there are no ‘magic fix’ or ‘bulletproof’ exercises for certain issues. Most exercise have a wide variety of uses.

Good rehab is simply about hypothesizing a ‘Why’ programming a “How’ and then either progressing, regressing and maintaining in response to feedback from the chosen management approach.

The internet is full of bu****it and I’m trying my best to not be a bu****it merchant.

Are you fed up with unnecessary repeat appointments that require your time and money?

Are you sick of non specific exercise sheets?

Are you frustrated by exercise that you don’t understand how to do or why you are doing them?

Have you been given rehab approaches that are impossible to fit into your weekly schedule?

I provide rehab approaches that address the injury/pain and THE PERSON with the injury/pain.

Included in all my rehab programs is remote monitoring for clients. Often one initial in person meeting is enough. The rest is directed remotely.

If you would like to try a rehab approach designed by someone who understands the nuances of exercise prescription, the variability of exercise programming and provides ongoing support throughout the process then have a look at my website and get in touch.

I will follow up with exercise videos I sent this client in a post tomorrow.
