🌳Every funeral we arrange at Family Tree is bespoke - shaped around the person who has died, the life they lived and what mattered most to them. Our funerals are never "off the shelf"; they are always a one‑off representation of who the person was.

🍃Recently, we supported a family whose person was passionate about gardening and vegetable growing. Working with Imogen Reeve at Saltbox (pictured), his funeral "flowers" were created from seasonal plants and home‑grown produce - can you spot the runner beans in this beautiful basket? The arrangement brought colour, scent, memory and humour into the ceremony.

🌹We're also mindful of what happens to flowers afterwards - whether they're taken home, shared with the community, composted, or left with the person. At Family Tree we care deeply about sustainability and can advise on locally grown, foam‑free arrangements, re‑usable vessels and planet‑kind ways to continue the story of any floral tributes after the funeral.

💬If you'd like to talk about a truly personal, sustainable funeral celebration - from flowers to venue and everything in between - we're here to help you create something that feels exactly right for you and your family.

🌿 Nailsworth Death Café – 25th March 2026 - Marking ten years of our café!

☕ A Death Café is a not-for-profit gathering where people come together to talk openly about death, dying and everything in between – over tea, cake and kind conversation. There's no agenda, no speaker and no selling; just a relaxed, safe space to explore a topic that touches us all.

☕ The idea began with Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz's Café Mortel in 2004 and was brought to the UK by Jon Underwood in 2011, whose family continue to support the global Death Café movement today.

☕ Death Cafés now take place all over the world, offering ordinary people the chance to share experiences, ask questions and gently normalise conversations about mortality. It isn't a counselling or bereavement group, but you're warmly welcome if you are bereaved.

☕ In Nailsworth, the Death Café is co-hosted by volunteers Jane Diamond and Tracey Clements every two months at:

The Canteen, Nailsworth, GL6 0DU

Wednesday 25th March, 7.30–9.15pm (arrive a little earlier to buy a drink) - there will be some anniversary cake!

Free to attend, no need to book – just turn up

☕ To find out more about the Death Café movement visit or the website, or contact Jane using the details on the poster.

💛 Grief after su***de can be unlike any other loss.

Those left behind often carry an immense weight - questions without answers, feelings of guilt, anger, and an isolation that can be hard to put into words. At Family Tree, we walk alongside families from the very first moment of loss, and we know that the support needed doesn't end after the funeral.

That's why we want to shine a light on the wonderful work of Sunflowers Su***de Support - a local charity providing a lifeline to those bereaved by su***de right here in the Stroud Valleys and beyond. 🌻

Their Stonehouse Evening Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month, 7–9pm, offering a safe, confidential, face-to-face space where people can share experiences, find understanding and begin to heal. Sessions are led by trained counsellor Jeanette Ward alongside compassionate Sunflowers volunteers, and each gathering focuses on a guided topic - from understanding grief and navigating inquests, to honouring your person's memory and finding hope.

Sign-up is required, so if you or someone you know could benefit, please reach out to Sunflowers directly via their website.

You do not have to carry this alone. 💛
At Family Tree Funeral Company we believe that care and community extend far beyond the funeral itself. We are proud to support and signpost the incredible local organisations working to hold people through their darkest moments 💛

🌿 The Luddenden Shroud – Stroud Screening 🌿

On Sunday 1 March we were delighted to partner with Stroud Film Festival for a special screening of The Luddenden Shroud at our local community hub. It was such a warm and thoughtful gathering.

Textile artist and shroud maker Rachel Hawthorn joined us in person to speak about the film and her work, which so beautifully weaves together friendship, nature and the realities of end of life. Her presence made the afternoon feel intimate and deeply human.

We were also delighted to have woven willow work on display from basket and coffin maker Helen Lomberg, whose craftsmanship reflects the same connection to land and tradition. After the screening, Helen, Rachel and Family Tree’s Jane Diamond joined Kat Child for a generous and wide-ranging panel conversation with the audience.

It was a beautiful reflection on care, community and how we might approach death with more openness and creativity.

We’re hoping to welcome Rachel back to Stroud soon for some making workshops - watch this space. 🌿

We are so looking forward to the Stroud Film Festival screening of 'The Luddenden Shroud' on Sunday 1 March, 3pm at the Trinity Rooms Community Hub.

If you haven't already got your ticket to watch this beautiful short film please head to our linktree bio or this link: https://www.stroudfilmfestival.org/theluddendenshroud

You'll be able to view the hand-felted shroud and foraged woven cradle, enjoy the film and meet the Shroud's maker, Rachel Hawthorn, during the post-screening Q+A. The panel includes Family Tree owner Jane Diamond, willow grower and weaver Helen Lomberg, and will be chaired by Kat Child.

The film is produced by Geoff Brokate and tells the story of the making of the shroud for Luddenden Valley resident, Janet. It documents Rachel and Janet's journey of making and reflection together. The result is a death-positive meditation on friendship and the healing powers of nature and creativity.

⚰This is the third in our series of posts about coffin-friendly venues where a funeral ceremony can take place.

❤End of life is a major life event, and choosing the right setting for a funeral or celebration of life is just as important as where we mark births, christenings and weddings. These occasions help families gather, remember and honour a life in a way that truly reflects the person they love.

📍The Trinity Rooms Community Hub in Stroud is one such local space that families can consider when arranging a funeral, memorial or celebration of life, with the option for the coffin to be present. It offers a warm, accessible and welcoming hall with beautiful natural light, suitable for gatherings, ceremonies and events, and can be hired specifically for these occasions.

👉🏽As a Community Hub, Eco Hub and Food Hub, Trinity Rooms hosts activities that benefit the environment, support health and well-being, improve social connection, tackle poverty and promote sustainable development, including food hub sessions and a community café on a pay-as-you-can basis. By choosing a venue rooted in this kind of community care, families can feel that their loved one’s farewell is held within the same values of kindness and solidarity that shaped their everyday life.

📍The Trinity Rooms is close to Holy Trinity Church in Stroud, offering added convenience for families who wish to combine a church service with a more flexible community-based gathering before or after. Whether a family wants something traditional, informal or entirely personal, highlighting local spaces like Trinity Rooms helps broaden choice and ensures each farewell can be crafted in the same thoughtful way as other key life celebrations. Head to their website for further info.

🎬If you haven’t yet visited, Family Tree is arranging a film screening of ‘The Luddenden Shroud’ which will be showcased at the Hub on Sunday 1 March 2026 at 3.30pm as part of the Stroud Film Festival. Tickets are available from the festival website or via our linktree bio.

Excellent advice from • as always🙏🏻:- “I just need to get through the funeral.”

Have you heard someone say this? Or perhaps said it yourself?

For many people, they arrive at the day of the funeral with the sole aim of ‘getting through it’. That is entirely valid.

Funerals can be long, exhausting and emotional days, especially if you are involved in organising it. Here we share some tips to help you take care of yourself on the day of the funeral - so you can get what you need out of the day.

We spend so much time planning the milestones of life – engagement parties, baby showers, christenings and weddings. A death in the family also calls for a very particular, but just as carefully considered, gathering to honour a loved one's life.

For some families, that means choosing a warm, welcoming venue away from a church or crematorium, where people can sit together, share stories and take their time. The Stroud Hotel, in the heart of the town, offers exactly that kind of setting.

Their private function space is step free. The space can be arranged for a simple ceremony, a memorial event or a funeral tea, with food, drink and music planned accordingly. Set in a newly revived Grade II listed building with a contemporary, relaxed feel, it’s somewhere local people can come together in comfort.

If you think a central Stroud venue like The Stroud Hotel might be right for your family, we can talk through options with you and help coordinate everything, from the ceremony itself to time together afterwards. Please contact us on 01453 767769 to start the conversation.
