💭 We wanted to share this reflective piece from Nicola at Simply Crafted Ceremonies - a compassionate contemplation on what it means to choose a direct cremation, and how grief and remembrance can look very different from one family to another.

👉🏼 You can head to our bio link to read it in full.

Choosing a direct cremation doesn't mean saying goodbye without care or love - it can be a decision rooted in respect, simplicity, and the desire to mourn in a way that feels right for you. As many experts note, direct cremation offers families the freedom to create a farewell that truly reflects the life and personality of their loved one: whether that's a quiet personal tribute, a gathering with friends and family later on, or a memorial at a meaningful place.

🍃 At Family Tree Funerals, we believe there is no one "right" way to grieve or to honour a life. Sometimes, removing the pressure of immediate ceremony - and instead allowing space for private reflection or for a memorial later - can offer clarity, calm, and emotional room to breathe.

If you're exploring direct cremation as an option, we're here to talk it through, to listen, and to support you - with compassion, honesty and respect.

🕊️ Whatever path you choose, what matters most is that it honours the person you've lost, and resonates with how you want to remember them.

As National Grief Awareness Week begins, Jane Diamond, owner and funeral director at Family Tree Funeral Company, is drawing attention to the increasing use of direct cremation and its potential emotional impact on grieving families when chosen for reasons that don’t fully reflect their needs.

🧡 Walking for Amelie 🧡

Some stories touch us so deeply that they become part of our shared community heart. For us at Family Tree, the journey of Tara, Matt and their daughters is one of those stories. They are close friends of Jane, and in July this year their beloved daughter Amelie died from Diffuse Midline Glioma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer, only four months after her diagnosis. She was just 15.

Amelie was full of life - sporty, vibrant, and deeply loved. Before she died, she suggested a walk across the length of the UK. In honour of her wish, her family are now carrying her spirit with them step by step, on an extraordinary 1,200-mile walk from John O'Groats to Land's End.

Their determination, courage and tenderness as they walk through this new landscape of grief is profound to witness. They are more than halfway through their journey, accompanied along the way by friends, supporters, and even two of Amelie's teachers as they pass through Gloucestershire.

This walk is not only an act of love - it is a mission.
The family are raising vital funds for research into Diffuse Midline Glioma, with the hope that one day no family will have to endure what they have faced.

If you feel able to support their challenge, you can donate via our bio or here:

We hold Tara, Matt, Sophia and all who loved Amelie in our hearts. Their bravery, their honesty, and their willingness to walk openly with their grief is extraordinary, and inspires us all.

🧡 For Amelie. And for the hope of a future with better answers.

National Grief Awareness Week 2025 - Growing with Grief 🧡

This year we're proud to support the National Grief Awareness Week campaign, whose theme "Growing with Grief" beautifully captures the tender, transformative nature of loss.

Losing someone we love can feel like an ending in every imaginable way. Over time, though, grief can also become the soil from which something new slowly begins to grow. We never return to who we were before - instead, we grow into someone shaped by love, memories, and resilience.

This growth doesn't remove the pain, but it can allow hope to reappear. Many people find that they become more present, more compassionate, and more aware of what truly matters in life. 🌿

As part of this year's campaign, you're invited to:
🌼 Plant seeds in memory of someone you love
📸 Share your photos on social media and tag the Good Grief Trust
🧡 Enter the 2026 Photography Competition
🚶‍♀️ Organise Walk & Talk events in your community
🟧 And on 8th December, the final day of the campaign, watch as communities across the UK light up in orange to honour those who have died and support those living with grief

At Family Tree Funerals, we are deeply committed to supporting people through grief - not only at the time of a funeral, but in the weeks, months and years that follow.

We offer a range of thoughtful grief support books, gentle guidance, and a compassionate approach rooted in understanding. Whether through practical help or simply holding space for someone's feelings, we believe in walking alongside our community as they find their own path through loss.

🧡 This week, and always, we stand with all who are grieving - and with all who are learning to grow with grief.

“Grief doesn’t end with the first goodbye.

After the death of someone we love, we often experience secondary grief — the ripple effect of additional losses that touch many areas of life. These can be just as impactful and long-lasting as the primary loss, leaving us feeling unsettled, isolated or unsure of ourselves.

Our one-off Ripples of Grief – Secondary Grief Support Group at Longfield Community Hospice offers a safe, supportive space to explore these feelings in confidence, with others who understand.

This support group is free of charge for adults (18+) who have been bereaved for more than 8 weeks and are registered with a GP in Gloucestershire.

Find out more, or pass on to someone who you think might benefit from this supportive group session.

☕️ A death café is a scheduled non-profit get-together or "social franchise" for the purpose of talking about death in a relaxed, safe and supported way. Hosting these cafes is just part of the way we can become be more 'death-positive' in our lives.

☕ The idea originates with the Swiss sociologist and anthropologist Bernard Crettaz, who organized the first Café Mortel in 2004. Jon Underwood, a UK web developer, inspired by Crettaz's work, introduced the death cafe to London in 2011, and launched the Death Café website. Following Jon's untimely death in 2017 at the age of 44, his family continue to oversee the growth of the movement.

☕ Death cafes have spread quickly across Europe, North America and Australasia. As of today, there have been over 18,000 death cafes in 89 countries since September 2011.

☕️ At a death café there is never a theme, commercial agenda or invited speaker. It is not a bereavement or counselling group but you are obviously welcome if you are bereaved.

☕ Jane Diamond and Tracey Clements founded and now co-run the death café in Nailsworth as volunteers for a regular, informal bi-monthly meet:

☕ It is free to attend
☕ It is held from 7.30-9.15pm (Come a bit earlier for a drink)
☕ At the Canteen, Nailsworth, GL6 0DU
☕ The next meet is on WEDNESDAY 26th 2025
☕️ To join in, head to our LINKTREE BIO or simply turn up!

🕊️ Why Regulation in the Funeral Industry Matters

Today's BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour featured an eye-opening discussion about the lack of regulation within the UK funeral industry. It offered an important glimpse into how the current system can leave grieving families vulnerable, relying heavily on trust alone when choosing a funeral director.

At Family Tree Funerals, we believe that families deserve transparency, accountability, and the reassurance that their loved one is being cared for to the highest possible standards. That's why, unlike many in the sector, we voluntarily seek independent assessment from two respected UK organisations:

🌿 SAIF (The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors)
🌿 The Good Funeral Guide

These assessments ensure that our work meets strict, up-to-date professional guidelines and that you can place your trust in us with complete confidence.

If you'd like to listen to the BBC segment, you can find it on BBC Sounds (18.11.25 episode, from 33:45). We've also added the link to our Instagram bio for easy access.
For Facebook head here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002mbly

Family Tree will always champion openness, high standards, and the importance of proper oversight within our industry. Your trust matters — and we work hard to earn it.

Did you know direct cremation is available from your local independent funeral company? You don't have to use an online remote provider.

Family Tree Funeral Company offers caring direct cremation—a straightforward and more affordable alternative to traditional funerals.

❓What is direct cremation?
Direct cremation means that there is no formal funeral ceremony: we care for your loved one, arrange for their cremation, and then return their ashes, always with compassion and respect. Many families choose to hold their own celebration or memorial afterwards, in their own way and at a time when they are ready.

🌟 Family Tree is offering direct cremations at £1,495, the same as the main national provider, and with our signature attention to detail and sensitive support to every family, and with options which are not available from larger online providers.

✅ If you're seeking clarity, value and genuine care, we're here for you every step of the way.
