🌿Exciting times....

🥀After the last two years of pilots and establishing our Get Wild and Learning Outside the Classroom Sessions, Learning through Connection is launching our new year of Outdoor Learning with Nature as teacher.

🌸We are exploring new sites to enhance and develop the content we are now able to offer.

🍃Learning through Connection enables young people to be met for who they are, where they are at and given learning opportunities to thrive and connect deeply with Nature, themselves and each other for optimal wellbeing and learning opportunities.

🌿We are pleased to present the sessions we will be running from September 2024.

🍁All sessions are now called Learning through Connection.

🌿Culminating this terms sessions on Navigation and Orientation in Nature, we put our map reading and compass skills to use on an expedition in the Slad Valley.
🌱We started from Bull Cross, used our compass to get our bearings and off we went.
☀️It was a beautiful day, blue sky and full sun.
🍃We had to closely follow our maps to find the paths through woodland, open land and wet land.
🌿We stopped near the water for our lunch.
🐾We collected wood and practised our fire making skills to cook bacon and sausages in buns.
🪵We filled our water bottles at a spring and had a welcome water fight, towards the end of our journey.
☘️We all went home tired but satisfied with our achievements of the day.

🌿Culminating this term's exploration of Fauna and Flora, we went on a field trip to Chalford Park.
🌱We went pond dipping with a kick net, observation trays and ID charts to look at the invertebrates living in our local water course.
☘️We discovered a whole world of water beetles, snails, fleas, freshwater shrimps, water mites and midge larvae.
🍃We dipped ourselves, had a picnic and played some rounders with our selection of green woodwork bats we have made during the term.

🍃Today, we explored the local brook.
🌿We collaborated in channeling water, making raised water courses with pipes, damming, working with water pressure and creating stone pools.
🐝We discovered a huge wasp/ hornet was also enjoying the cool shade near the brook.

🐞We continued to look at the Animal Kingdom.
🦡We defined that Vertebrates have a spinal column which allows them to have more complex bodily systems.
🐌And that Invertebrates do not have a spinal column.
🪱Approximately 97% of animals on our planet are invertebrates, or animals with no backbone, and each plays its role in our ecosystem.
🦇🐜We divided animals up as to whether they are vertebrates or invertebrates and considered their biological characteristics.
🔥We became more proficient at our T-p*e fire.
🍕 Then cooked Camp Fire Pizzas which were enjoyed by all.
🌿We did some Green wood work projects with the shave horse everyone built together.

🐝We considered what is the classification of life and why it is useful.

🌿We recapped the kingdoms of life as well as their evolutionary timeline.

🐜We discussed the categories of biological characteristics that are used to classify life forms

🪱Are they vertebrate or invertebrate?

🦇Are they cold or warm blooded?

🦉How do they breathe?

🐦We matched the biological characteristics of mammals, birds, fish, insects, amphibians, reptiles and molluscs

⛳️We did some team collaboration games

⚽️And practised our football skills.....

☀️Navigation and Orientation in Nature

🌿After identifying all our map symbols last week, we learnt what an ordinance survey map is.

🌱Using an OS map of the local area we explored and discovered map characteristics.

🌾We found 37 map characteristics and 53 symbols, we discussed their relevance and meaning.

☘️We deepened our knowledge and skills using a key, or legend, found on all OS maps, to help us interpret and use the map characteristics.

🌳We located and introduced the concept of a scale on OS maps ready to revisit this in more detail next week.

🍃We did some more planning for our expedition and started a kit list.

🔥Young people undertook teaching others the Fire Accreditation for a Tee p*e fire.
