Movement Class James is an enthusiastic yet down to earth coach.

From an early age James has developed a passion for all things movement, from surfing & snowboarding to yoga & adult gymnastics. At the age of 30 James made the transition from running his own electrical business to building his personal training career. He has studied gymnastic strength training and is a qualified GST coach. The importance of breath work was developed while studying freediving in

Thailand, which is where James’s passion for yoga was born and more recently has studied the fundamentals of Vinyasa and Yin during a trip to Bali and Australia. To deepen his understanding of the body James went onto gain qualifications in both Thai and Sports massage. Whilst working a labour intensive job James began dedicating many hours to the weights room with the aim of improving his fitness. However, it became apparent through tight shoulders, recurring injuries and restrictive movement that his workouts were not serving
his needs. It was during this period he began to seek a more athletic movement based approach, finding this in gymnastics and yoga. This approach is reflected in his class style where James incorporates his personal journey from strength through movement to flexibility and breath work. The aims of these classes are to not only achieve these elements but to build upon the fundamental connections
between mind and body, to form more conscious driven practice. The primary focus of these classes will be to build the intricate strength and body awareness required for specific asanas such as arm balances, transitions and inversions, while paying particular attention to core control. James specialises in the deconstruction of asanas into movement specific exercises, these asanas are then reconstructed using the newly acquired awareness.

Time and money invested in yourself is never a waste.

12 years ago I did just that. I had just sold my business and was now a 30 year old with no direction. The only thing I did know is that I wanted to follow the things that truly called to me, not what my head told me I should do.

Training since I was 16 I had wanted to become a personal trainer but thought I couldn't. There were many subjective reasons as why not to - just be an electrician and make money my head told me. I mean I was now 30 for a start and that's too late to retrain, right?!

So I started to put money aside each month and slowly started retraining. I picked up courses where I could and invested in books 📚 I started to ask questions to find a deeper understanding.

This was the beginning and it was full of doubt and self questioning especially when you are looking at your last £80 and your bills are due!

As the following 12 years progressed everything started to pick up traction. New habits became seeded, I exchange nights out for studying and bought courses instead of pints and shots at the bar.

I didn't start out with a definitive road map only that I wanted to follow my passion. Taking that path has led me to gain certificates as a

- Personal trainer
- Yoga teacher
- Sports massage therapist
- Thai massage therapist
- Gymnastic strength coach

But by far the greatest part of the last 12 years has been the experience of working with so many incredible people on their individual journey's across the world.

When you free yourself of the 'should do's' and lean into 'how' the options are unbounded 🌏✨

I am hugely grateful to every teacher, student, client and friend that I have met and learnt and continue to learn so much from 🙏 And to every Gym, studio, yoga school and therapy centre that has supported me and my work 👊🏻

Introducing 'Element of Flow'

Helping people to address areas they feel are holding them back from progressing.

Giving support and guidance to those going through a transition in their life or are seeking a change because they are simply not happy where they are.

All of this can be incredibly daunting and scary and through this we can find ourselves procrastinating and then berating ourselves for the inaction.

This is where simple manageable steps can be incredibly potent at creating sustainable momentum.

We have become accustomed to using quick 'cure's' for problems in order for us to carry on, or to move the issue aside.

We tend to pass the problem forward hoping it will right itself.

Duct tape doesn't fix cars and pills don't fix movement problems.

Therapies such as postural assessment combined with corrective massage and focused personal training, look to address the root cause of pain and discomfort, resolving it permanently.

By taking this approach we are not passing the issue forward as we age, helping to prevent issues like arthritis, hip and knee replacements, joint issues, migraines, herniation, tendonitis / bursitis, stress caused by vagus nerve imbalances, digestive issues.... The list goes on.

How are you currently managing your pain?

Is the approach that is being taken moving you forward and strengthening your movements or is it more about pain management and learning to live with the pain?

almost 2 years living on the tropical island of Koh Phangan set within the Gulf of Thailand, marks two major dates for me.

The first being a little over 10 years ago I decided to make a fundamental change to the way i was living. Early that year I had hit 30. I was running a business which I had grown from the age of 19 and I felt tied to. I was struggling with insomnia, digestive issues and a cascade of events left me heavily in debt.

A little over 6 months later I was sleeping solidly every night, I had sold my business, set a plan to be out of debt over the next 5 years, taken a dream trip to Thailand and had secured a new job as a ski guide.

My plan beyond this was to reinvest what money I had left into retraining into something I was truly passionate about.

My 40th marked the second. 10 years on I am living in the same place I had dreamed of visiting.

A huge anniversary of a plan that had seemed impossible.

During my 20's there were roadblocks in my way and I had put a ceiling on what I thought was achievable. As I changed those same blocks became opportunity and I realize there is no ceiling, there are only small steps of effort and hard work moving forward when you set the right direction with conviction.

Injury prevention workshop

Overview & purpose of this course is to introduce and explain the benefits of taking a more mindful approach to training and to start to break down the understanding of the intentions of certain practices / asanas.

OBJECTIVES -
- Introduce and explain the importance of a safer practice
- To use students' experiences and postures.
- Explain via observation and experience how the body creates ‘movement solutions’ around restrictions and or habitual patterns.

How does your body express movement?

To break down the possible external influences that may impact or contribute towards injuries within practice.
🔹Environment
🔹Daily posture - Sleeping position - Seated posture
🔹Movement patterns - Walking gait
Shoes - clothes - backpack
🔹Life hygiene - diet - hydration - sleep - 🔹Rest+Recovery ( not all diets are the same for every person )

🔹Frequency of training ( training volume )
🔹Intensity of training
🔹Previous injuries ( ability to be able to articulate a joint )

Goal setting although useful in many ways can seem daunting.

We can see the target as beyond our reach or even diminish our potential plans as we see it as not possible or not for us.

There is nothing wrong with having a target, the trick is to reverse engineer the process to today's starting point. Looking at the final goal can make that initial step seem too far away and stop us or cause us to procrastinate.

Once we understand or possibly accept where we are starting from we can then take that first step.

The key is that the first step is small, almost too simple, the second also and the third. Here we start to create momentum and habit, we get positive reinforcement from achieving which will help sustain through the early days of habit formation.

For example if the target is to start the gym, then starting with a short routine of 20minutes something like 5mins treadmill 5mins rower 5mins bike 5mins stretching hamstrings, quads, chest and back.

If the gym is not your thing then starting to walk for 10mins around where you live increasing this each day by an extra minute. Once you hit 30mins adding in a gentle jog for 5x1min during the walk.

With both these examples we are building the habit of doing and making space for this in our day. As we start to see progress and find more ease then we start to slowly increase the time.

These are generic examples but the concept can be applied to wherever you are on your journey and wherever your goals are leading you.

If the getting started seems too daunting, please feel free to reach out.

Physical Element

My core values for ‘Physical Element’ come from my personal journey in fitness and my passion for movement; from surfing & snowboarding to yoga & adult gymnastic strength training, weight training, free diving, slacklining and wakeboarding.

In 2013 I started a regular practice in Gymnastic Strength Training and in 2016 I qualified as GST coach, having assisted in the European GymnasticBodies Seminar in the summer of 2016 alongside coach Christopher Sommers.

Wanting to understand the role anatomy plays in physical practices in more detail, I gained qualifications in both Thai and Sports Massage to combine with my disciplines. I then went on to study Levels 3 and 4 Sport Massage Therapy from the Cotswold Academy in the UK. Additionally to this I have gone on to add qualifications in both myofascial cupping and kinesiology taping.

In my professional pursuit to gain greater depth and understanding of movement, I studied the fundamentals of Vinyasa and Yin Yoga in 2016 in Bali and Australia and developed my practice to the point of receiving my 200hr Alignment Yoga certification in early 2020.
