Wonderful to hear that the evidence is being collated on how effective hypnotherapy is in managing chronic pain. I see this regularly with clients.

In the vast realm of chronic pain management, a debate rages on. While traditional medications have long been the go-to solution. Could there be an alternative lying in the depths of the subconscious brain? Can hypnotherapy truly be a game-changer? The Study’s Rationale Why This Research Matters?

There is so much pressure on people to look a certain way, we are constantly bombarded with pictures in the media which can be very unrealistic and lead to a lot of anxiety in clients. I hope the following testimony will bring any of your struggling some hope that things can and do change :)

"Angela is an extremely supportive, non judgmental and caring person who I am so grateful to have had sessions with. Nine months ago I reached out to Angela again to help me cope with a recent loss of a good friend. I have never been so grateful to speak to her. Angela helped me cope through grief and understand what was going on. We then focused on my mood especially around anxiety and body image. Over the months Angela has given me a whole host of tools and a complete perspective change on how to view myself and the world around me. I now feel confident and happy in myself, and of course still have bad days but Angela has helped me understand those negative feelings and how I can work on them even when I am not seeing her. I could not recommend Angela enough – she has changed my life style and my mood day to day and am so thankful for it. I know I will use the resources she provided me with through out my whole lifetime."

If you are struggling with sleep issues or insomnia, do no despair - things can improve and we all have the ability to shift and change things as this testimonial I just received explains.

‘I just want to say a huge, huge thank you to you for looking after me in my time of need - I know that sounds dramatic but from the first time we met I knew you would be there for me.
Diagnosed with Chronic Insomnia is not an easy thing to digest & being left alone to cope with it was absolutely shattering for me. I just didn’t know where to turn ..until someone I work with mentioned your name .
From that very first email I sent you, I knew from your reply you were going to do everything in your power to help me. Your positivity was just what I needed to drag me back up to somewhere I wanted to be.
We went through ups & downs together, but you always believed I’d come back to me being me again. Each session with you was incredible, you were my life line & I took in & did everything you told me however tired & exhausted I was I listened … Now after 8 sessions with you I am nearly back to my old self.
It will take a little while to recover from so many months without sleep, but I now have the tools to help myself when I feel a bit wobbly & knowing you are at the other end of an email, or a txt means the absolute world to me.
Thank you so much for being there for me.’

Just received this from one of my clients
"I have done 6/7 weeks of sessions with Angela and she has helped me feel positive, motivated and back to my normal self! After hitting some personal problems with sleep, eating and relationships I felt like I fell down a rabbit hole and couldn’t see the light. I was a bit tentative with the hypnotherapy at first but the impact has been amazing. It provides the opportunity to take a step back from life and simply relax.
Angela has given me fantastic techniques that I can apply to many situations and aspects that may arise in my life. These techniques enable me to feel controlled and confident in my actions and let me take a step back to evaluate thoughts and situations without becoming anxious or overwhelmed. I would really recommend reaching out to Angela no matter how big or small your problem may seem because I know she will be able to help'

So if you are feeling tentative, would like to talk or would like to give it a go - do phone or message me.

If you are feeling anxious and not the best version of yourself, the combination of psychotherapy and hypnotherapy can really give you back control of your life. This is a recent testimonial from one of my clients

"I approached Angela to help me with my general anxiety which manifested itself as nausea and dizziness, making day-to-day life somewhat difficult and draining.

Before I started working with her, I couldn’t imagine a time when I would be able to pop to the shops without feeling anxious about the prospect, let alone be able to confidently walk down the aisle at my wedding without feeling nauseous or dizzy. Only a few sessions in, I was able to walk into a crowded restaurant without panicking, do my entire weekly shop without feeling sick and even attend a medical appointment without getting lightheaded.

I have been battling my personal form of anxiety for almost 20 years and never thought I would reach this point. I was even able to actually enjoy walking down the aisle at my recent wedding, as none of my usual anxiety symptoms even made an appearance - something which I would not have been able to achieve without Angela’s sessions!

If any of the above sounds familiar, I would highly recommend booking in some hypnotherapy sessions with her!"

As I am waiting for knee surgery at this very moment. I have some of my lovely colleagues hypno tracks ready to go, this article made me very happy. Hypnotherapy really makes a difference when undergoing surgery, it has been shown in many trials, less anaesthetic required, less anxiety and quicker recovery. Great stuff!

IBS – Irritable bowel syndrome
Shocking statistics are that 1 in 5 people in the UK have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). The good news is that hypnotherapy can have a significant impact on the sometimes-chronic symptoms.
The digestive system starts from the throat and ends at the a**s – it is the whole processing of food through the small and large intestines – clients with IBS can experience feelings of bloating – significant bloating – whilst processing foods clients can flip between constipation and diarrhoea.
When visiting the GP it can take a while to exclude super nasties like bowel cancer and other IBD (irritable bowel diseases such as Crohn’s, and ulcerative colitis). Typically, when you visit GP in UK you will go through series of exclusion tests to make sure you don’t’ have other things going on and then diagnosis of IBS – It is frustrating as it is quite a complicated experience. IBS can come and go, it can be incredibly painful when you get it – aggravated by stress, tiredness, food stuff.
Most common symptoms stomach pains or cramps usually after eating. Usually after going to the toilet the cramping calms down. It doesn’t take long to associate stomach pain with eating and relieving of pain with going to the toilet. The person experiences physiological experience of eating, but also psychological stress of eating and then being relieved by going to the toilet. Bloating can be so significant clients may not even be able to wear trousers.
BS can impact on the bladder too – it can irritate it – making clients need to p*e more often, sudden urges to p*e. The bladder feels inflamed. You can get a loss of warning of the need to p*e. Client’s can get mixed feelings - they think they are full when only half full or don’t realise they are full and may have already started to p*e – as the bladder is receiving mixed signals.
Other symptoms – tiredness, bloating, sharp stabbing pains, lack of energy lack of muscle. Body out of sync.
Anxiety and depression increase the risk of IBS. With gastrointestinal infection and anxiety your risk of developing IBS 2.74 x (3 times the risk!)
Studies report (on multiple studies on 1000s of papers on studies) Hypnotherapy rebalances the client’s way of thinking, being and doing. It helps with the biological impact of IBS, strategies around social impact, and physiological impact. Hypnotherapy is a useful and safe option for IBS. In 2017 Professor Peter Whorwell – conducted a large survey on the protocol and rational for using hypnotherapy to treat IBS. It deduced that gut focussed hypnotherapy is highly effective when conventional treatments fail. It modulates the brain gut pathways and sensory motor function. It helps reduce the pain, reducing the anxiety and calm the gut as a direct result. Hypnotherapy significantly improves symptoms.
Scans show that brain functioning after hypnosis turns back to results of normal functioning adults with no IBS. For 999 people out of a thousand there is a direct result of your hypnotherapy intervention! It significantly results in severity, pain, bloating, bowel habit and life interference. Is hypnotherapy better than other types of therapy?
Supportive therapy shows about 20% improvement short term and long term but Gut directed hypnotherapy 80% improvements short term and 90% of symptom in long term! (2 year follow up) After 12 sessions of hypnotherapy –patients had reduced medication, reduced anxiety, and massive improvement in general wellbeing.

Not an easy read but interesting for those who may suffer from these debilitating conditions. And great that more research is being done to see how we can combat them. I have worked with lots of people to help them cope better with their conditions so they can go about their lives, it would be fabulous if a cure were to be developed to eradicate them altogether.

IgG antibodies may be attacking the immune cells surrounding nerve bodies in fibromyalgia, long COVID and ME/CFS.

Eating Awareness

Today starts Eating Awareness week. This is an area that affects so many people, whether it is controlling eating, avoiding eating, selective eating. The brain picks up quickly on cues (thoughts that pop in our head) as to how we behave around food, and we can then get into a negative cycle of behaviour. It can be exhausting, frustrating, and isolating to get stuck in these patterns, especially when very often we can’t understand ourselves why we are behaving in this way towards eating. We may feel judged by others, threatened or full of anxiety which can really impact on our sleep as well and compound the whole issue.

There is so much that can be done to help clients with eating issues. In what can can seem like an uncontrollable battle, there are steps which we can take, tiny shifts in behaviours and patterns of behaviour that can make a significant difference to helping us take back control.

Using hypnotherapy and psychotherapy we help clients break the loop and association with foods, so they can cope. It helps create a subconscious change, by altering the way they respond, think, feel and behave towards food and eating.

We do this using our brains fabulous neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to literally rewire itself based on our habits, the thoughts we have, and the experiences we encounter) enables us to view food differently taking away the threat. Clients create new neural pathways, new connections, and as a result enable clients to start trying new foods..

Great to see this article featured in New Scientist last week and covered in NCH. So many people suffer with IBS which can be so debilitating. Having worked with many clients with this condition I can confirm how effective hypnotherapy is .

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition that affects many people; roughly 8 million people are thought to be affected in the UK. The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) says IBS can be debilitating, preventing people from achieving simple tasks such as going shopping or enjoying long walks. Comprising of symptoms such as abdominal pain, this syndrome can have a big impact on life quality. Often doctors feel powerless to help; the mechanisms of IBS are poorly understood by most and many treatments are only somewhat effective.

Gastrointestinal disorders are complex, and the causes are different for every patient. It’s important that if you experience sudden changes in your digestion and comfort levels that you see a GP and receive a diagnosis as these symptoms can be an indicator of serious illness.

Grace Wade reported in New Scientist that …”the chronic gut pain people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) experience may be due to long-lasting activation of a select group of gut cells. In mice, these cells continue to react to irritants even after the substances have left the gut.” This over-sensitivity leads to the cramping, churning, diahorrea, and constipation as the digestive system tries to react to what it perceives as an invader.

Dr Peter Whorwell is one of the world’s leading experts in IBS management is pioneering treatment for IBS using gut-directed hypnotherapy. That is, hypnotherapy which specifically draws a person’s attention to the sensations and activities in their gut and uses the power of the mind to calm the system.

In 2018 specialists from the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands decided to investigate more into the mechanism of gut directed hypnotherapy. They found that their research subjects who participated in hypnotherapy (either individual or group sessions) reported a statistically significant improvement in their IBS symptoms. A newly released app called Nerva which guides people through an online hypnotherapy programme claims that the majority of their members see a significant improvement in 6 weeks of daily sessions.

With so many different hypnotherapy based options available to people who are suffering from IBS, it seems clear that this is the way of the future. Rather than attempting to figure out complicated or expensive restricted diets or curtailing activity, people can find a trained hypnotherapist for individual or group sessions, or use an app to learn the tools that they need to start to feel comfortable.

It is world mental health day today. It is celebrated every year to help raise awareness that all of us can suffer mental health issues from time to time. It is nothing to be embarassed about and we are encouraged to talk openly about our struggles.

It highlights the importance of taking small steps to improve our mental health, keeping channels of communication open even when our minds are screaming at us to stay at home, not go out, and not interact with others.

This can lead to loneliness or isolation, basically when we feel when our relationships do not meet our own expectations - we may even question interactions with others. Genrally people think of loneliness as being alone, or having few friends. It can also be a lonliness of not belonging - this means you could be in a large gathering and still feel alone in that situation.

As human beings we have an intrinsic need to be part of a tribe - to connect with others - to belong.

So keep lines of communication open, if you notice a friend, work colleague, or aquaintenance has been a bit quiet or 'weird' of late why not send them a message or offer meet up for a walk or coffee. Generally, we have no idea of the impact we can have on others - a bit like a boomerang - the more positivity you put out the more will come back.
