Great event tonight Walk N Talk attending a gathering at Hylton Castle focused on opening a respectful and supportive conversation about gambling addiction and its impact on our community.

Joined by performance snippets by Hannah Walker and Faye Alvi, with integrated BSL performances and a discussion with Dr Matt Gaskell, Consultant Psychologist at the NHS Northern Gambling Service, and a delicious buffet dinner.

Our own Paul Thompson and Bri Carter went in for the Academy Award tonight on stage, whilst Eddy Conniff-Carter and Liza Hills enjoyed the performance with tea and cake 🤣🤣

Great session tonight at Brews Brothers (New Springs City Church Sunderland) 👏🏻👏🏻 where men got together to speak, share pizza/cuppa and have an informal chat at the group session! We were also joined by a guest speaker from Game of Two Halves from the Foundation of Light who gave a helpful presentation and chat on their work championing mental health awareness in Sunderland. We all recognised the importance of coming together in our work!

Good afternoon everyone.
I have been wanting to touch on this subject for a while and produce something around this theme. A long hated term I hear quite often… “man up” 🙄😮‍💨.

Generational Stigma- “man up”.

When did Men’s mental Health in North-East England become a serious issue and why?

Well there are various factors up for debate….

Is it generational, a society issue or down to our regional environment?

The North East was and always has been built on heavy industry such as; Mining, ship building, manufacturing and physical labour. Typically male dominated environments. In which discussing “your feeling’s” wasn’t a favourable or acceptable option.

We have generations of men who were never taught the language to describe their mental health, their feeling’s, but instead on how to “graft”!
Their priority… was putting their family first and contributing to putting food on the table and to leave their hardship at the door, joke it off and go to the local working men’s club.
The typical stereotype we still see today!

The consequence of this has arguably caused a generational issue, that has been passed down as a taught behaviour, and leaves no room for discussion. A culture that favours emotional silence that is disguised as resilience.

In present time, we now have modern pressures on top of this attitude; debt, insecure work, isolation, social media, and relationship strain etc.

In addition, we have regional statistics that we can’t ignore! Men in North East England face some of the highest overlapping risks in the UK across:
• Su***de
• Alcohol-related death
• Gambling harm

WE NEED TO BREAK THIS STIGMA!!!
It’s okay to not be okay.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available:
• GP or NHS 111
• Samaritans - 116 123 (UK & ROI)
• In an emergency, call 999

Can we all take a moment to come together in support of brave Oliver Maw. The family, have recently received some difficult news on the 11th of this month regarding his battle with neuroblastoma. After relapsing in June 2025, Oliver has shown incredible strength and resilience throughout his journey.
In late 2021, he traveled to the Royal Marsden in London for a nine-week chemotherapy trial that successfully cleared the neuroblastoma, giving him a glimmer of hope. However, during the recent trial at RVI in October 2025, the family learned that the scans still show signs of the neuroblastoma.

This news has been incredibly challenging for them all, but as a strong loving family they remain committed to supporting Oliver every step of the way. He is set to begin radiotherapy on March 9th, as further chemotherapy is not an option for now. But hopefully his oncologist will develop a new treatment plan soon.
Can we all come together, and unite in our hope that the cancer can be kept at bay until his radiotherapy begins and that it won’t spread any further. WALK N TALK as well as our community would like everyone to show their unwavering support during this difficult time, and we know that together, we can help Oliver face this next challenge with strength and love.
C’mon Oliver son - get this kicked into touch
Love from us all ###
